  • seizures may occur between the piston skirt and the cylinder liner in an internal combustion engine. Such seizures tend to occur in the part of the liner which is not exposed to the running-in of its surface by the piston rings, and from there spread up through the cylinder. If the seizures spread to an area with a high contact pressure between the piston ring and the cylinder liner, the piston ring will also seize. This results in a hardening of the piston ring and eventually in a very rapid wearing-out of the cylinder liner.

  • the recess preferably extends continuously round along the inner side of the cylinder liner.
  • a recess is preferably positioned above the scavenging ports. With this position, apart from acting as a seizure barrier, the recess will also act as an oil reservoir and collect part of the lubri ⁇ cating oil pushed downwards by the piston rings during the expansion stroke. This oil is usually lost through the scavenging ports when the piston rings pass them. Instead, at least part of this oil is collected in the annular recess, and during the upward movement of the piston, the oil will then again come out of the reser- voir and help lubricate the piston rings, which are now on their way upwards in the liner. Thus, it is possible to save on lubricating oil.

  • the recess 11 positioned above the scavenging ducts 9 further has the advantage that oil driven downwards by the piston rings during the expansion stroke when the engine is running, penetrates into the recess 11, which thus acts as a reservoir. During the upward movement of the piston, the oil will again come out of the recess 11 and have a lubricating effect on the piston rings, which are now on their way up through the cylinder liner 1.
  • the recess 10 is positioned about one third of the height of the scavenging ports below them, while the recess 11 is positioned about the height of a port above the scavenging ports. According to need, more recesses may be used, and their exact position is not decisive for their function, they merely have to be positioned in the lower part of the cylinder liner 1.

Abstract

Cette chemise de cylindre est destinée à un moteur muni d'un piston à au moins un segment, et comprend au moins un évidement annulaire (7) ouvert vers l'intérieur et présentant une alimentation en huile, ledit évidement étant situé au-dessus du point mort bas du segment supérieur. Un second évidement annulaire (10, 11), qui ne s'ouvre que vers l'intérieur du cylindre, est placé en un point correspondant à plus de 65 % de la course du piston au-dessous du point mort haut du segment supérieur.
