- the present invention relates to a cylinder liner for a two-stroke crosshead engine with an intermediate bottom and with a piston having at least one piston ring, comprising at least one annular recess open inwards and with an oil supply, which recess is posi ⁇ tioned above the bottom dead centre of the uppermost piston ring.
- Cylinder liners of this type are known from, for example, EP patent publication No. 0 299 174 and non- examined Japanese patent application No. 61-279 716.
- seizures may occur between the piston skirt and the cylinder liner in an internal combustion engine. Such seizures tend to occur in the part of the liner which is not exposed to the running-in of its surface by the piston rings, and from there spread up through the cylinder. If the seizures spread to an area with a high contact pressure between the piston ring and the cylinder liner, the piston ring will also seize. This results in a hardening of the piston ring and eventually in a very rapid wearing-out of the cylinder liner.
- the object of the invention is to prevent such seizures, were they to occur, from spreading.
- the recess preferably extends continuously round along the inner side of the cylinder liner.
- a recess is preferably positioned above the scavenging ports. With this position, apart from acting as a seizure barrier, the recess will also act as an oil reservoir and collect part of the lubri ⁇ cating oil pushed downwards by the piston rings during the expansion stroke. This oil is usually lost through the scavenging ports when the piston rings pass them. Instead, at least part of this oil is collected in the annular recess, and during the upward movement of the piston, the oil will then again come out of the reser- voir and help lubricate the piston rings, which are now on their way upwards in the liner. Thus, it is possible to save on lubricating oil.
- a recess is preferably positioned below the scavenging ports, as in this type of engine it is particularly in this area that seizures occur.

- the recess 10 is positioned below the scavenging ducts 9, and the recess 11 is positioned above them.
- the recesses 10 and 11 cause seizures, which may occur from time to time between the cylinder liner 1 and the skirt of the piston which will move up and down in the cylinder during operation, to be stopped, viz., they do not spread above the recess 10, 11 which is closest above the place where the seizure first occurs.
- the recess 11 positioned above the scavenging ducts 9 further has the advantage that oil driven downwards by the piston rings during the expansion stroke when the engine is running, penetrates into the recess 11, which thus acts as a reservoir. During the upward movement of the piston, the oil will again come out of the recess 11 and have a lubricating effect on the piston rings, which are now on their way up through the cylinder liner 1.
- the recess 10 is positioned about one third of the height of the scavenging ports below them, while the recess 11 is positioned about the height of a port above the scavenging ports. According to need, more recesses may be used, and their exact position is not decisive for their function, they merely have to be positioned in the lower part of the cylinder liner 1.
