  • the invention provides a method of providing an insulating coating on an electrical wire with a flame retardant protective coating, characterised in that the method comprises dispersing melamine cyanurate into a polyamide to form an intermediate composition containing a pre-determined proportion of melamine cyanurate, dispersing said composition into a further quantity of the polyamide to form a moulding composition containing 5-30% by weight of the melamine cyanurate, and extruding said moulding composition onto said insulating coating.
  • the method according to the invention results in a smooth elongatable coating which provides sufficient fire retardancy to enable the flammability tests to be passed.
  • the moulding composition can be extruded without undue problems such as foaming occurring.
  • Melamine cyanurate is a well known flame retardant used in quantities of about 5-10% by weight in Nylon 6 which is used for injection moulding electrical components. However, if the standard formulations used for injection moulding are used for the purpose of a protective coating as referred to above, it is found that unsatisfactory coatings are obtained. When the percentage of melamine cyanurate is increased, the material is found to foam in the extruder and give increasingly rough coatings. However, with the use of the method according to the invention, the foaming problem is not experienced during compounding and smooth satisfactory coatings are obtained.

  • a screw type plastics extruding machine was used to disperse 50% by weight of melamine cyanurate into a Nylon 6.
  • the intermediate composition extruded by the machine thus contained a predetermined proportion of melamine cyanurate.
  • the extrusion from the machine was allowed to solidify and was granulated. It was then dispersed into a further quantity of the high viscosity Nylon 6 in a further extruding machine which extruded the composition through a die on to the insulating coating of an electrical wire.
  • the coating was approximately 125 microns in thickness.
  • the moulding composition extruded had a melamine cyanurate content of approximately 15% by weight, ie the intermediate composition was dispersed into an equal quantity of Nylon 6.
  • the extruded protective coating was found to have a very smooth surface which was substantially free of imperfections and gave good elongation.
  • the wire also passed the standard flammability test.

L'invention concerne un fil électrique ayant un revêtement isolant recouvert d'un revêtement protecteur. On disperse du cyanurate de mélamine dans un polyamide pour former une composition intermédiaire qui est dispersée dans une quantité additionnelle du polyamide et extrudée sur le revêtement isolant.
