Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a water-resistant adhesive composition which is especially suitable as an adhesive for corrugated boxboards.
  • the invention also relates to a process for preparing said composition and to an use of said composition as an adhesive for corrugated boxboards.
  • a gluing process is carried out and comprises the transfer of a glue line of a starch adhesive composition from an applicator roll to the flute tips of a corrugated medium, the application of a liner thereon and the heating of the adhesive composition to gelatinize the uncooked starch and form a bond between said tips and liner.
  • the amount of heat required to evaporate water contained in the glue and gelatinize the uncooked starch significantly increases when manufacturing double and triple wall boards, to thus negatively affect the speed of the process and the possibility of having a sufficient amount of heat through the whole boxboard.
  • SUBSTITUTE SHEET Also, it is to be noted that it is well known in the art to provide water resistance to boxboards when adding in the starch adhesive composition a resin such as ketone aldehyde, to cross-link the water-soluble starch. However, the pot life of such a mixture is limited to 6 to 8 hours. Also, the water resistance of said cross-linked starch is not sufficient for packaging containers used in transportation or storage of vegetable products, meat products or other moisture containing materials. Furthermore, it is to be noted that the current materials used to cross-link starch, such as borax, boric acid, ketones, aldehydes and formaldehyde, are toxic, and a move is underway to restrict their use in food packaging.
