Abstract

A gas discharge lamp is disclosed which has a sealed envelope filled with a mixture of gases in which the gases are ionized by a high-frequency electrical field applied by external electrodes.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 14 November 1994 (14.11.94); original claims 1-4 and 6 amended; original claim 5 unchanged; new claims 7-9 added (2 pages)]
1. A gas discharge lamp comprising: a sealed envelope filled with a mixture of gases selected to emi when ionized, radiation of a wavelength determined by the mixture of gases, means external of the envelope for applying an electric field t the gas mixture in the envelope which ionizes the mixture of gases within the envelope and at least one window in said envelope, said window having transmissibility to certain of said radiation wavelengths higher than the transmissibilit of said envelope to said certain of said radiation wavelengths; such that said certain of said radiation wavelengths are transmitte through said window.
2. A gas discharge lamp comprising: a sealed envelope, a gas mixture in said envelope, said gas mixture selected to em radiation of predetermined wavelength when the gas mixture is ionized, at least one pair of spaced electrodes external to said envelope wit one of said spaced electrodes on each side of said envelope, means for applying high frequency voltage between said space electrodes to give rise to an electric field across said envelope having a strengt sufficient to ionize the molecules in the gas mixture between said spaced electrode whereby to generate ions and electrons which recombine to emit said radiation in glow pattern, and at least one window in said envelope, said window having transmissibility to certain of said radiation wavelengths higher than the transmissibilit of said envelope to said certain of said radiation wavelengths; such that said certain of said radiation wavelengths are transmitte through said window.
3. The gas discharge lamp of Claim 2 in which said spaced electrode are planar.
4. The gas discharge lamp of Claim 2 in which said spaced electrodes are curved to concentrate the electric field.
5. The gas discharge lamp of Claim 2 which includes multiple pairs of electrodes which are adopted to be energized to control the glow pattern.
6. The gas discharge lamp of Claim 2 in which said spaced electrodes are designed to allow radiation incident on said spaced electrodes to be projected through said spaced electrodes.
7. The gas discharge lamp of Claims 1 or 2 wherein said window is calcium fluoride.
8. The gas discharge lamp of Claims 1 or 2 wherein said window is magnesium fluoride.
9. The gas discharge lamp of Claims 1 or 2 wherein said window is lithium fluoride.
