Definitions
- the present invention relates to an expansion device of the cervical canal , which is introduced in said canal for example for diagnostic purposes, in the interruption of pregnancy, in all surgical operations which need the execution of the dilation of the cervical canal , etc. , and more particularly the invention relates to a non- traumatic expansion device, which after having been introduced in the cervical canal , allows to enlarge the latter progressively by exerting only radial pressures, and which therefore does not need to be extracted and inserted in the period of time within the single steps of the dilation operation.
- Hegar expanders are made of steel which can be sterilized in an autoclave, for example, or they are made of plastics and can be disposed of after use. They form a set of cylindrical instruments with a rounded point and a smooth surface, each one having an increased diameter with respect to a foregoing of the set.
- the object of the present invention is to eliminate the foregoing disadvantages, providing an expansion device whose introduction in the cervical canal requires only a moderate force, so that only one Museux pliers is requi red .
- Another object of the present invention is to provide an expansion device which exerts only radial pressures, so that it will be introduced only once into the cervical canal , and this will involve several advantages as regards a non-traumatic execution of the dilation operati on .

- the expansion device 1 comprises a tubular element 2 with a knurled surface in order to facilitate the grasp, and with three slits 3a, 3b, 3c.
- the slits 3a, 3b, 3c having a rectangular shape, terminate at the end 4 of the tubular element 2 and respectively at three intermediate points 5 arranged at the same level along the tubular element 2.
- Said three slots 3a, 3b, 3c are arranged at an angular distance of 120° from each other.

- the metal point elements 9a, 9b, 9c are therefore also located in said slits 3a, 3b, 3c, so as to define three sectors of 120°, as clearly shown in Figs, lb and 2b.
- the ensemble of components 6, which is inserted in the direction of the arrow A (or B) in the tubular element 2, comprises also a conical element 10 having a first axial bore 11, through which passes the rod 7, the latter having a conical point 12.
- the conical element 10 is fixed by means of screws (not shown) to the upper end 4 of the tubular element 2.
- the end of the rod 7 opposite to the conical point 12 is slidingly inserted into a hollow cylindrical portion 13 integral with a cylindrical knob 14, which is knurled on its outer periphery.
- the cylindrical knob 14 is screwed on the lower end of the tubular element 2, on the outer thread 15 of the latter.
- the screw 16, which is inserted in an appropriate seat on the bottom of the cylindrical knob 14, is screwed from the outside in a second axial bore 17 obtained at the lower end of the rod 7.
- the metal point elements 9a, 9b, 9c are pushed radially out of the tubular element 2 when the cylindrical knob 14 is completely screwed, whereas, when the latter is screwed out until it has reached the position of Fig. la, the metal point elements 9a, 9b, 9c are pulled inwardly, inside the tubular element 2.
- the metal point elements 9a, 9b, 9c define a cylinder with a rounded point, at the upper end of the expansion device 1, when the latter is in the condition shown in Fig. la, but they also have planar (i .e.
- the conical part 8a has three guide slots 20b each corresponding to a respective metal point el ement .
- the stop 23 prevents the knob 14 from being completely screwed out if the screw 16 is not previously screwed out .
- a washer 40 screwed on the rod 2, at the position shown in the drawings, allows after it has been screwed out, to replace each metal point element 9a, 9b, 9c, by taking it out of the respective guide slot 20a or 20b.
- the operation of the expansion device is the following: once the upper cylindrical end 31 of the expansion device has been introduced inside the cervical canal , the knob 14 is screwed, so that the conical parts 8a, 8b and the conical point 12 will spread the metal point elements 9a, 9b, 9c.
- a micrometric readout scale 30 will allow to evaluate the dilation obtained during every step of the di 1 ati on . Since only a single device is used, instead of several instruments as in the case of the Hegar instruments, it is obvious that several advantages will arise, both as regards sterilization, and the successive rearrangement on the operating-table.
- metal point elements can be mounted, whose ends 31 introduced in the cervical canal will define cylinders of a greater diameter with respect to those of Figs. 1-6.
- the expansion device can be adapted to the following practical situations:
- Figs. 5 and 6 show an expansion device which differs from the expansion device of Figs. 1-4, by the fact that the conical parts 8a, 8b do not have guide slots, and the metal point elements are provided with radial projections 32, 33 which cooperate with the conical parts 8a, 8b in order to push the metal point elements out of thei r seats .
- steel return springs 34, 35 are employed, which cause the metal point elements to return in the position of Fig. 5.
- the way in which the advancement of the rod 7 is performed/adjusted may be of any kind.
- the rod 7 may be actuated by an hydraulic device, a pneumatic device or the like, the adjustment being obtained by adjusting the pressure of the actuation fluid in every single step of the dilation of the cervical canal .
