- Anti-HIV antibodies were detected in the sahva of all 25 HIV positive patients and no non-specific antibody was detected in the 5 negative controls.
- Saliva collected from 252 patients with a collection device in accordance with the invention and recovered with a recovery device in accordance with the invention was tested for the presence of HIV antibodies using a SalivaCard rapid assay.
- the sahva was collected from patients located in Ireland, India, Senegal and U.S.A. and the disease status of the patients was confirmed by standard ELISA and/or Western Blot assays.
- 157 patients were found to be positive for HIV 1 or HIV 2 antibodies by the SahvaCard assay and the confirmatory tests. 95 patients were found to be negative by both methods.
- the apparatus according to the invention is particularly suitable for use by hospital emergency rooms, clinics, medical and dental surgeries, and additionally in settings where HIV testing has become routine, such as in screening armed forces personnel, prisoners, insurance applications and for assessing immigrants.

Abstract
Dispositif (50) de récupération de salive à partir d'un dispositif absorbant et compressible de prélèvement de salive. Il comporte un récipient (51) et un organe (56) destiné à comprimer le dispositif de prélèvement de salive lorsqu'il est introduit dans le récipient en vue d'en exprimer la salive et les matières organiques entraînées telles que l'immunoglobuline. De préférence, le dispositif de prélèvement de salive est une masse fibreuse à absorption de salive, par exemple en rayonne, ne présentant sensiblement aucune affinité de liaison pour les matières organiques présentes dans la salive. La salive exprimée est distribuée par un mécanisme compte-gouttes intégré (53) en vue d'un dosage immunologique.
