Abstract

A bath mat (10) is disclosed that provides a portable device for converting a typical bathtub (70) into a safe, more user-friendly environment for bathing infants/preschoolers or individuals with impaired mobility. The bath mat (10) provides both a system for catching fluids that splash over a top rim of the bathtub while bathing and a padded surface to cover the top rim of the bathtub to ease discomfort of the parent or care giver who must lean over the bathtub. The bath mat is designed so that attachments (21), for the convenience and entertainment of the bather and the care giver (such as toys, cartoon characters, brushes, etc.), can be removably attached to the bath mat. In addition, the bath mat provides surfaces for receiving the buttocks and head of individuals who may require support from a caregiver.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS

1. A device for assisting a bathing process, said device comprising: a section positionable on a rim of a bathtub, said section including a limited-slip surface adapted for contact with said tub rim along a substantial portion of said tub rim; a soft section traversing at least a major portion of said section; at least one flap extending from said section for cooperating with the participants of said bathing process; and means for collecting liquid spilled from said bathtub, said collection means attached to said one flap, wherein said one flap is attached to said section at a proximal end of said flap and extends down over the outside of said bathtub to a distal end, said liquid collecting means positioned substantially at said distal end of said flap.

3. The device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said section further includes a traction enhancing surface traversing a width of the upper side of said section.
4. The device as set forth in claim 1, further comprising means for removably attaching objects to said device.
5. The device as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a flap attached to said section forming a bottom section that fits into a bottom of said bathtub.
6. The device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said device is composed of a flexible material.
7. The device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said device is furlable. 19
16. The mat as set forth in claim 9, -further comprising a bottom section that fits into a bottom of said bathtub, said bottom section being restrained by said limited-slip surface.
17. A bath mat for use on a top rim of a bathtub, comprising: a limited-slip surface on a portion of an underside of said mat; a padded section traversing a portion of a width of said mat, said padded section positioned on said top rim of said bathtub; and a means for collecting liquid spilled from said bathtub, said collecting means attached to a section of said mat external to said bathtub and restrained by said padded section.

19. The mat as set forth in claim 17, further comprising a traction enhancing surface traversing a width of an upper side of said mat and in juxtaposition with said padded section.

A device for assisting caregivers during the bathing process, said device comprising a section positionable on a rim of a bathing tub, said section including a limited-slip surface arranged for contact with said tub rim; a soft section traversing at least a portion of said section; at least one human supportable surface restrained by said section and positionable within said tub along the bottom surface of said tub.
