Description
Adjustable Drinking Vessel Shade
The present invention relates to the shading, of drinking vessels from the sun, for the purpose of keeping drinks cool. The invention provides a shade and, optionally, means for cooling or thermally insulating drinking vessels.
Cool drinks exposed to sunlight in hut surroundings will rapidly become warm. It is an object of the invention to provide a shade whereby drinks may be protected from the sun and, preferably may be cooled or thermally insulated.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a drinks shade, comprising a base member adapted, in use, to support at least one drinking vessel, a shaft affixed to said base and extending generally upwardly therefrom, and shade means mounted at an upper end of said shaft, the height of said shaft and the dimensions of said shade being suitable for shading at least part of said at least one drinking vessel located upon said base member, in use.
Preferably, the shaft and shade are adapted to allow the position of the shade means to be adjusted relative to the base member. The shaft is preferably provided with a ball joint dividing the shaft into an upper portion and a lower portion, said ball joint permitting adjustment of the angle of said upper portion to said lower portion.
Most preferably, said shade means comprises a miniature umbrella.
In one embodiment, said base member comprises a hollow casing adapted to contain frozen or chilled material such that, in use, a drinking vessel located on the base member will be chilled by contact therewith.
In a second embodiment, said base member is thermally insulating. Preferably, the thermally insulating base member comprises a sealed vacuum unit, or a hollow body containing insulating material.
Preferably also, said base member is in the form of a shallow tray.
Preferably also, said shaft is removably mountable in a socket formed in said base member.
Preferably also, the shade means is collapsible and the base member includes means for stowing the collapsed shade member and shaft.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a drinking vessel shade
embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a detail side view illustrating the adjustability of an umbrella-like canopy forming part of the shade of Fig.l; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a base member forming part of the shade of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an isometric view of the base member of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a plan view of a an alternative, openable base member forming part of the shade of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is an isometric view of the base member of Fig. 5, opened for receiving chilled or frozen material or thermally insulating material; Fig. 7 is a side view of a further embodiment of the invention in which the base member is configured as a shallow tray comprising a sealed vacuum or otherwise thermally insulating casing; Fig. 8 is a plan view of the embodiment of Fig. 7; Fig. 9 is a sectional side view on the centreline of the base member of the embodiment of Figs. 7 and 8 ; and Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a further embodiment of the invention, in which the base member comprises a decorative tray.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows a drinking vessel shade in accordance with the invention, comprising a base member 10, in the form of a tray of suitable size for supporting a number of drinking vessels (not shown) , and an adjustable shade 12 in the form of a miniature umbrella-like canopy 14 mounted on an articulated shaft 16.
The shaft 16 of the shade 12 comprises a lower portion
18 having a threaded lower end 20 and an upper portion 22 connected to an upper end of the lower portion 18 by means of a universal-type ball joint 24 or the like, whereby the angle of the upper shaft 22 may be adjusted relative to the lower shaft 18. The lower end 20 of the lower shaft 18 is removably secured in a threaded bushing 26 located substantially at the centre of the base member 10. The canopy 14 is thus supported above the base member 10, and is of a size suitable to shade substantially the whole vessel-bearing area of the base 10. The ball joint 24 allows the canopy 14 to be adjusted, as seen in Fig. 2, so as to follow the movement of the sun and to maintain the tray in shade over an extended period.
The shade 12 is preferably collapsible, and the base member may be provided with means such as lugs 28 for stowing the collapsed shade 12 when not in use.
The base member 10, essentially comprising a drinks tray adapted to receive the shaft 16 of the shade 12, may vary in construction and configuration, and may be of any appropriate shape, such as rectangular, circular, elliptical or more complex shapes, and may be provided with handle portions or the like. In the preferred embodiments of the invention, the base 10 is adapted either to thermally insulate or to chill the drinking vessels placed upon it. For this purpose, the base preferably comprises a hollow casing which may be sealed to enclose a vacuum or thermally insulating material, or to contain freezable/chillable liquid. Alternatively, the casing might be openable so as to receive a separate thermally insulating element or a capsule of freezable/chillable liquid.
Figs. 3 and 4 show the base unit 10 configured as a sealed insulating or chilling unit. In the former case the base 10 would enclose either a vacuum or a suitable "cher ally insulating material. In the latter case the base 10 would enclose a suitable liquid which would be chilled or frozen in a refrigerator or freezer prior to use. A sealed base of this type might suitably be formed from plastics material.
Figs. 5 and 6 show the base 10 configured as an openable casing having a hinged lid 30. This base is adapted to receive either a separate insulating element or a separate capsule of freezable/chillable liquid. Such elements or capsules may be removable and interchangeable. In this case the base might suitably be formed from stainless steel.
Figs. 7 to 9 show an example of a sealed unit tray and shade embodying the invention, in which the base comprises a shallow elliptical tray with handle portions 32. Fig. 10 shows still another embodiment with a generally circular sealed unit tray. In both of these cases the side walls of the tray may themselves be hollow to enclose thermal insulation or chillable/freezable liquid.
The invention thus provides a versatile shaded tray which firstly shades drinks from the sun, and secondly either insulates or actively chills drinks placed upon the tray.
Improvements and modifications may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
