Abstract
A mineral wool fabric or mat with a wire mesh quilted on, preferably one side thereof, particularly for panelling walls and/or ceiling of ships and boats, is under the aspect of cost efficiency and weight reduction characterized in that a nonflammable protective layer (3) is provided between the fabric or mat (2) and the wire mesh (4).
Description
"Mineral Wool Fabric"
Mineral wool fabric or mat with a wire mesh quilted on, also known as woven steel fabric, is already known as insulating material for pipes and containers. In the shipbuilding in¬ dustry, this type of steel fabric is covered with sheet metal to provide a wall-like surface at the interior side of a room in which said fabric is used.
In the effort to provide solutions that are more cost effective and have a reduced weight, i.e. to completely eliminate sheet metal sheathings in some areas, the object of the present in¬ vention, especially in the shipbuilding industry, was to provide in a simple manner a mineral wool fabric or mat for the thermal and sound insulation of walls and/or ceilings of a ship, e.g. in the parking deck. At the same time, this in¬ sulation should serve as an appearance cover for these walls and ceilings, while it should be non-flammable, resistant to external damage, e.g. caused by handling or sharp objects, and pleasing to the eye.
The object is advantageously accomplished in that a non¬ flammable protective layer is provided between the mineral wool fabric and the wire mesh. A preferred protective layer is made of glass fabric. In a preferred embodiment, the glass fabric layer and the wire mesh are attached to the mineral wool fabric only by means of quilting, preferably on one side thereof. A preferred non-flammable quilting thread is one that is made of wire or glass. The general IMO regulation on non-flammability for the shipbuilding industry are thus advantageously satisfied.
Further, the present invention is distinguished in that the glass fabric layer covers the mineral wool fabric such that the latter does not show through resulting in a uniform color of
the visible side and, at the same time, it reliably prevents material from trickling down.
Due to the structered surface on the visible side of the glass fabric layer, e.g. a pattern and/or a special color, it is advantageously possible to obtain a visually pleasing surface. Further, owing to the tear-resistant nature of the glass fabric, a secondary surface protection such as a sheet metal cover is no longer required.
For the wall and/or ceiling panelling of the invention to be resistant to external damage, the glass fabric layer should advantageously have a weight per unit area of >= 100 g/m^ and a set of at least 11 threads/cm. The tensile strength should amount to >= 800 N/50 mm to protect said glass fabric as best as possible from damage through sharp objects which may hit the walls and/or ceilings when baggage is loaded, for example, or from indentations caused by the hands of curious passengers.
Finally, the invention determines that the structure of the mineral wool fabric of mat provided according to the invention for the particular purpose of insulating the interior walls and/or ceilings of ships can be classified as non-flammable according to IMO regulations, a fact which is of crucial importance to fire protection in the shipbuilding industry.
Fig. 1 shows a segment of mineral wool fabric 1 for panelling walls and/or ceilings which essentially comprises a layer of rock wool 2 with a bulk density of 90 kg/m^ onto the one side of which there is quilted by means of wires 5 a layer of glass fabric 3 and onto the latter in turn a wire mesh 4. The wires 5 traverse all layers 2, 3, and 4.
