  • This invention relates to plant identification tags and more particularly to plant identification tags for attachment to pots, trays or containers which accommodate small plants or seedlings, usually temporarily during sale and prior to transplanting.
  • Identification tags of the general kind contemplated herein are well known and are shown, for example, in Australian patent specifications 553710 Wood et al, 61568/86 A.J. Newport & Son Pty. Ltd., and 620016 Norwood Industries Pty. Ltd..
  • the tags are usually required to be attached to or adjacent the top edge of the containers which are made of plastics material, and a slot or like aperture is moulded into the container rim for accommodating the tag and retaining it in position.
  • the known arrangements generally suffer disadvantages in that the slots or apertures are difficult to mould to the tolerances required or the tags are relatively easily removed therefrom which, in the latter case, facilitates changing of tags from one pot to another in a merchant's store by unscrupulous customers who change a tag from a cheaper plant to a more expensive plant to be purchased.
  • the known tags are also prone to being accidentally removed and thereby lost in transit or in store.
  • the invention provides a tag for attachment to a pot, tray or like container for plants or seedlings, said tag being formed of thin flat resilient material and having a face portion for displaying information and a stem depending, in use, downwardly from said face portion and for connecting said tag to a said container, characterised in that, said tag has a slot extending through the stem in a direction generally horizontally, in use and a fold or crease traversing said slot in a direction generally perpendicular to the direction of said slot whereby, at said slot, the tag has a substantially V-shaped cross-section whereby when said stem is passed, in use, through a slot in the rim of a said container, the horizontal sides of said tag slot are adapted to bear on the upper and underneath sides of said rim, respectively, when said tag is in the attached position.
  • the invention provides a tag and plant container combination comprising a tag formed of resiliently flexible material and having a face portion for displaying information and a stem depending from said face portion; and a container having means for receiving and retaining said tag, characterised in that, said tag has a slot through the stem and extending across a fold or crease line, which fold or crease line extends along said stem towards said face portion causing said tag to have a substantially V-shaped cross-section at said slot, said container has a flange or rim for receiving and retaining said tag by means of an aperture in said flange or rim which receives said stem, said aperture being elongated and having a length sufficient to allow said stem to pass therethrough until said tag slot is engaged by said flange or rim and a width slightly greater than the thickness of said tag whereby said tag requires resilient deformation at said fold or crease line to become substantially planar for insertion through said aperture and upon resilient reformation the sides of said slot engage opposite surfaces of said flange or rim as to retain said tag
  • a plant container having a rim or flange for receiving and retaining said tag, said aperture is generally elongated and has a length sufficient to receive the width of a thin flat resiliently flexible stem of said tag, said stem having a slot therethrough and the sides of said slot engaging the upper and lower surfaces of said flange or rim, respectively, when said slot is substantially coplanar with the plane of said aperture and said stem assume a generally V-shape configuration.

  • a container 15 in the form of a plant pot has an outwardly extending rim or flange 16 around the upper edge and the rim or flange 16 is provided with an aperture 17 for receiving the stem 12 of the tag 10 and retaining the tag in position such that the stem 12 extends down the outside wall of the pot and the face portion 11 sits above the rim 16 to display information as required to readily identify a plant contained in the pot-
  • the aperture 17 has an outward longitudinal side 18 conforming to the curvature of the rim or flange 16 and an inner longitudinal side 19 which curves slightly in the opposite direction and is provided with a tongue 20.
  • the tongue 20 is centrally located along the side 19 and extends towards the side 18 leaving a gap 21.
  • the gap 21 has a width slightly greater than the thickness of the tag 10.
  • the tongue 20 is co-planar with the rim or flange 16 and the length of the aperture 17 is such that the stem 12 may be passed downwardly through the aperture until the tag slot 14 is in the plane of the rim or flange 16.
  • the length of the aperture 17 may be just sufficient to allow the stem to penetrate to the point where the slot 14 is co-planar with the rim 16 so as to restrict further downward movement of the stem or it may be wider than is necessary-
  • the lower end of stem 12 is deformed so as to straighten the V section whereby the tip of the stem may be inserted through aperture 17 at the narrow portion defined by the tongue 20. Very little, if any, straightening is required as the tip is very narrow at this point and almost conforms to the curvature of the container.
  • the tag may be forced downwardly, which causes deformation (flattening of the V-section) of the tag, until the slot 14 is engaged by tongue 20 allowing the tag to reform to the normal V-shaped configuration due to the resilience of the tag. The tag then assumes the position shown in Figure 4 wherein it is interlocked with tongue 20 and cannot be removed from the pot without extreme difficulty.
  • the pot or container aperture 17 need not have the tongue portion 20 in which case the aperture is a parallel sided aperture which may be curved to conform to the curvature of the pot or may even by a straight sided aperture. It will be evident that insertion of the stem 12 through the aperture until the tag slot 14 is coincident with the edge of the container aperture 17 will cause the tag to be retained in position in a similar manner to that described above in relation to Figure 4. In other words the longitudinal sides of the slot 14 engage the surfaces of the flange 16 above and below the flange respectively.
  • Figures 5, 6 and 7 show an alternative form of the aperture 17 which is an elliptical shaped aperture having a tongue portion 20 extending part way across the central portion thereof. It will also be apparent that tongue portion 20 is raised above the plane of the rim 16 of the container which in this case is in the form of a seedling tray.
  • the tongue portion 20 has a ridge 22 and inclined surfaces 23 which slope downwardly away from the ridge 22.
  • the ridge 22 and the surfaces 23 also slope downwardly in a direction across the aperture 17. The purpose of the slopes is two fold.
  • the slope assists in guiding the tip of the tag 10 into the gap between the end of the tongue portion 20 and the side of the aperture 17 whereby the tip is more easily inserted. This is useful in mass production of completed containers with plants therein as the tag must be inserted quickly on a production line usually be manual labour.
  • the sloping surfaces assist in ensuring that soil which spills onto the rim 16 when the contained is filled, does not block the aperture 17 and thus create difficulties in inserting the tag. The sloping surface cause such soil to fall through the aperture 17.
  • the tag 10 is shown by broken lines 24 in Figure 6 in the position it assumes when attached to the container. As in evident the V-shaped section which the tag 10 assumes due to the fold 13 ensures that the tag cannot be easily removed.
  • the edges of the aperture 17 have a bevel 25 for the purpose of guiding the tip of tag 11 therethrough and also for dispersing soil which inadvertently falls thereon.
  • the tongue portion 20 is domed or curved in section and inclined downwardly across the slot for this purpose.
  • the tag slot 14 have a shape which conforms to the profile of the tongue rather than being a simple rectangular slot.
  • FIG. 11 and 12 Another and more basic embodiment is shown in Figures 11 and 12 wherein the aperture 17 and tongue portion 20 are totally planar and resemble the arrangement shown in Figure 4 with the minor variations to the shape of the aperture and tongue.
  • this embodiment there is no provision for guiding the tag into and through the aperture but the shape of the aperture is such that soil is unlikely to be retained therein and block passage of the tag.
  • This embodiment is only slightly less basic than the parallel sided aperture referred to hereinabove.
  • the aperture 17 and tongue 20 may be readily provided in order to accommodate and retain the tag 10.
  • the tag 10 may take many different forms and may for example have definite shoulders for limiting the downward passage of the tag through the container aperture. It is important that the tag have resilience so as to retain at least a generally V-shaped section in the absence of external forces.
  • the tag of the present invention provides a very simple tag which is easily manufactured and which can be engaged with the unique aperture arrangement provided by the invention to provide a combination of tag and pot which avoids or overcomes the difficulties encountered with prior art a ⁇ angements.
  • the width of the tag slot 14 is slightly greater than the thickness of the container rim or whatever tongue or tongue and lip combination is provided therein, so that the unique engagement between the respective parts is provided.
  • the container is formed either by injection moulding or vacuum forming; the latter being preferred as a more economical method of production and the embodiments described above readily provide for vacuum forming.

Abstract

Une étiquette (10) destinée à être fixée sur un pot, un plateau ou un récipient similaire (15) conçu pour des plantes ou des graines, comporte une partie frontale (11) informative et une tige (12) qui permet de la fixer au récipient. Cette tige présente une fente transversale (14) et une rainure ou un pli (13) central(e) traversant cette fente en direction du bas et conférant à l'étiquette une forme en V au niveau de cette fente. Les arêtes horizontales de la fente viennent en contact avec les surfaces supérieures et inférieures du rebord (16) du récipient lorsqu'on fait passer la tige par une ouverture (17) pratiquée dans ce rebord pour y maintenir l'étiquette en place. Le matériau souple qui constitue l'étiquette s'aplatit au passage de la tige par l'ouverture (17). Celle-ci peut comporter une languette inclinée et découpée (20) s'étendant sur une partie de sa largeur pour s'engager dans la fente dont la forme peut être adaptée à celle de la languette.
