Abstract
The wine cooler (1) is made of a transparent material and is supported by a transparent carrier column (3), which serves as a light conductor for light emitted by a lamp (5) in a base member (4) for the carrier column (3). The contents of the wine cooler are illuminated hereby so as to be observable and are presented with a particularly decorative effect.
Description
A wine cooler with an illumination device
The invention concerns a wine cooler comprising a com¬ pletely or partly transparent container which is inter- connectible with a light device.
Wine coolers for cooling articles, in particular beverages such as wine, liquor and champagne, are preferably con¬ structed with a view to maintaining a suitably low tempe- rature of the contents over a desired period of time.
It is known to make wine coolers of an opaque material, and in which a desired temperature is provided for an im¬ mersed article by means of ice and a mixture of ice and water. However, wine coolers of the mentioned type are constructed such that it is impossible, from the side, to observe their contents with the eye. Only the part of an article which possibly protrudes from the open end of the wine cooler can be observed, whereas the contents at the closed end are consealed and can possibly only be observed from the top, or only be observed when removed from the wine cooler.
It is likewise known to make wine coolers of transparent materials through which light from the surroundings can penetrate, impinge on the contents and be reflected there¬ from toward a possible observer. Owing to arbitrary scat¬ terings from condensed water, scratches or other scatte¬ ring objects on the walls of the wine cooler the light from such transparent wine coolers is often very weak, so that the light reaching the observer is insufficient for him to get an idea of the contents of the wine cooler.
This combined with the fact that wine coolers, in particu- lar for cooling wine or champagne, are often used in an
environment in which the surrounding light is subdued and is therefore very weak per se, makes wine coolers based on the prior art incapable of giving an observer an impres¬ sion of the contents under such light conditions.
The primary object of the invention is therefore to pro¬ vide a wine cooler whose contents can be illuminated, and whose contents can be observed from the outside, and also to give the presentation of the contents of the wine cooler a greater decorative effect.
This object is achieved according to the invention by a wine cooler which comprises a completely or partly trans¬ parent container which is interconnectible with a light device.
The invention will be explained more fully on the basis of a preferred embodiment shown in the drawing, in which
fig. 1 shows a wine cooler according to the invention, and
fig. 2 shows an alternative embodiment.
Fig. 1 shows a wine cooler 1 in the form of an upwardly open bucket whose bottom is provided with a depression on the underside to receive a carrier column 3. The carrier column 3 is secured at its lower end in a casing or a base member 4, which is hollow, and whose interior accommodates a lamp 5.
The wine cooler 1 and the carrier column 3 are made of a transparent material, so that the carrier column 3 serves as a light conductor for the light from the lamp 5, which is guided up into the bottom of the wine cooler 1 and dis- tributes in it and illuminates its contents.
Fig. 2 also shows a wine cooler 1 placed on a carrier column 6, which is carried by a casing or a base member 7. The carrier column 6 is in the form of a pipe whose upper end accommodates an electric light source or lamp 8. The lamp 8 is fed with electric energy through two electric conductors 9 arranged in the tubular carrier column 6. The electric conductors 9 can be passed to a plug through the base member 7, or a battery power supply for the lamp 8 may be incorporated in the base member 7. Here the lamp 8 illuminates the bottom of the wine cooler 1 directly, so that here too the light distributes in the wine cooler 1 and illuminates its contents.
The embodiments of the invention in figs. 1 and 2 make it possible for the contents of the wine cooler to be illumi¬ nates in an expedient manner, so that its contents can be observed through the transparent material of the con¬ tainer.
Since the wine cooler 1 is made of a transparent material, part of the light from the lamp 5 or 8 will also be spread to the surroundings. This results in a particularly deco¬ rative or attractive effect.
The wine cooler 1 is detachably mounted on the carrier column 3 or 6 and can be used alone and without illumina¬ tion from the bottom like traditional wine coolers.
The wine cooler 1 in fig. 1 can also be used without the carrier column 3, since the wine cooler 1 can be placed directly on the base member 4 so that the lamp 5 illumi¬ nates the bottom of the wine cooler directly.
In the preferred embodiment the base member 4 is moulded in metal and the lamp 5 is preferably a glow lamp provided with a reflector below the lamp. A lens may be arranged
between the lamp and the bottom of the carrier column, or the bottom of the carrier column may be constructed as a convex lens which contributes to enhancing the illumina¬ tion of the wine cooler.
The decorative effect of the wine cooler of the invention can also be utilized to advantage by alternatively placing flower decorations in the wine cooler, which thus serves as a flower vase.
