Description
A CONCENTRATE FOR SKIN LOTIONS, CREAMS, AND SIMILAR SKIN
PREPARATIONS
The human skin, and particularly the skin of the face, is exposed to considerable stress with consequential ageing effects, such a the formation of wrinkles. Make-up too, is a skin-stressing factor. Numerous preparations have emerged on the market to counteract these ageing effects. However, these preparations are very expensive and since they must be used over prolonged periods in order to have the desired effect, the consumer's skin-care costs often become considerable. In order to be efficient, the preparation must contain a great number of various substances having different effects which, in combination, provide the desired results. Because of this complexity of the products, the manufacturers have been in a position to charge what must be regarded as unreasonably high prices for their products.
The purpose of the subject invention is to provide a concentrate of active substances which, in a particular combination, may be added to all commercially available skin lotions, creams, foot-care creams, and similar products. The addition of the concentrate in accordance with the subject invention increases the efficiency rate of such products to a maximum degree. Own their own, such products cannot penetrate all the way into the stratum corneum of the skin to rehabilitate it without the aid of e.g. vitamin A.
For this purpose, the invention concerns a mixture which may be added to "ordinary" lotions and the like in the form of e.g. a tablet, a dragee or as a liquid con¬ tained in a bottle or an ampoule, preferably as a one-dose pipette, to give a product having a very good effect.
An additive of this kind thus is to contain the ingredients providing the effects that one wishes to obtain, as will be described in the following.
Vitamin A counteracts the effects of the free radi- cals and accelerates the rate of cell division in the epidermis. It makes the stratum corneum thinner, thus resulting in an increase of the blood supply in this layer. It also regenerates the collagen in the connective tissue of the skin, resulting in slow disappearance of the brown discoloration of the skin which is a sign of old age. One has also found that vitamin A to some extent has a beneficial effect on eczema.
Vitamin E, which is an anticoagulant agent, pene¬ trates into the skin and prevents the fat in the skin layer cells from oxidizing. In addition, vitamin E prevents vitamin A from combining with oxygen and dis¬ integrate.
Silicic acid should be included since it contributes to the reinforcement and regeneration of the cells of the connective tissue of the skin. In addition, it contributes to the reparation of cells damaged by the UV rays during sunbathing.
Zinc is a valuable additive, having stimulating effects on the generation of cells. Prosolat is a filter with protective effects against UV radiation, particularly the especially pernicious UVB rays.
Vitamin C has an adstringent effect, i.e. it has a rejuvenating effect on the skin cells and kills harmful bacteria. Pantothenic acid increases the energy metabolism of the cells, and protects against and reduces damages caused by sun rays and X-rays.
Another substance which it is useful to include in the hair preparation in accordance with the subject in-
2 vention is vitamin B (riboflavine). This vitamin furthers cell breathing and plays an important part in furthering skin health. In this connection it should be mentioned
that growth of cancerous cells is possible only when the cell lacks oxygen.
In accordance with the subject invention one has found that these agents and substances may be combined into a concentrate which, in the form of a liquid dose, may be added to a lotion, and these doses may be distri¬ buted in bottles, in one-dose pipettes or in the form of pills. This has proved to be possible, provided the products are mixed in accordance with the specification of claim 1.
This preparation, which thus is obtained when the concentrate in accordance with the invention is mixed in the specified amounts with 50 ml of a lotion, should be used over a prolonged period in order to be efficient, and by prolonged period in this case should be understood at least 12 months. However, it should be pointed out that the effects of the preparation obviously depend on the individual and that consequently in some cases results may be obtained more rapidly whereas in other cases longer periods of treatment are required. The rate of ageing being, of course, highly dependent on the genetic heredity. Skin ageing may manifest itself in deep lines and round ridges. The skin becomes dry and scaly, exhib¬ iting localized discolorations, known as old age spots. The supply of blood to the skin becomes irregular and cracks appear easily, in addition to which the skin becomes very thin and as a result parched and wrinkled. Deep veins may become visible, which is a consequence of the disappearance of connective tissue. The skin may whiten as a result of faulty capillaries and it may become flabby as a result of disturbances in the ability of the skin to retain water in the deeper layers.
As has already been mentioned, one has found that the ageing of the skin may be affected and that even already existing damage may be repaired, or, in other words, that it is possible to rejuvenate the skin, by using a lotion which is enriched with the concentrate having the compo-
sition defined in accordance with the invention. Although effects may be noticeable already after a treatment period of two months, the treatment should be continued up to 18 months to achieve maximum effects. Owing to its specific composition, the product in accordance with the invention hasa particularly good effect since one has found that the discrete components not only have the above-referred to separate effects but that in addition thereto, besides being compatible, the components quite unexpectedly mutually reinforce the above-stated effects specific to each individual compo¬ nent, at least in several cases.
In order to demonstrate the effects in accordance with the invention the following tests were carried out. The tests were carried out for a period of 14 months and the tests involved 10 women, aged 30-70 years and thus exhibiting different degrees of wrinkle generation. All ten women were given a preparation in the form of a cheap, commercially available lotion which was enriched with vitamin A and vitamin E. The preparation was applied on the entire body once a day. The skin become rosy and small surface wrinkles disappeared after a treatment period of six months. However, the deep wrinkles remained. The younger women withdrew from the test at this point since they did not have any deep wrinkles, whereas the older women, i.e. aged 50-70, continued the experiment.
For the continued tests two preparations were made from a cheap, commercially available lotion. Preparation 1 was enriched with vitamins A and E whereas Preparation 2 was enriched with the concentrate in accordance with the subject invention. The tests were carried out in the following manner. The women applied Preparation 1 on one half of the body and Preparation 2 on the other half. Preparation 1 continued to smoothen existing wrinkles at a slow pace whereas Preparation 2 increased the rate of this activity and in addition thereto was found to have a deeper effect. The reason therefor most likely is the
vitalizing effect of vitamin A on the dermis layer and the increased supply of blood, allowing also the rest of the vitamins and the minerals to penetrate deeper into the skin and produce a more extensive rehabilitation of the skin and interrupt the degeneration thereof, or in other words, an interaction of the ingredients took place.
Old-age spots faded, white pigment-free spots dis¬ appeared as also some forms of excema. Also warts dis¬ appeared and deep wrinkles and lines were reduced. The experiment was interrupted after 14 months, the reason being that the persons in the test wished to use the preparation including the concentrate in accordance with the invention on the whole body. The difference between the two halves of the body could be evened out after a treatment over 6 months with the preparation in accordance with the invention.
The product in accordance with the invention is primarily intended to be used on normal skins. Persons with sensitive skin may find that the skin becomes somewhat rosy and slightly irritated at the beginning of the treatment. However, these effects may be eliminated by diluting the prepared lotion with a further amount of lotion and by using lotion thus diluted for about two months. Adoption of a trial-and-error method is recom- mended to find the strength suitable to the individual's skin.
When one exposes the to for strong UV-rays, for instance during sunbathing or prolonged soutdoor stays in strong sun-light, one should use a supplementary skin- protective preparation with a rather high protection factor, although the product in acccordance with the invention contains prosolat which has good protective effects against harmful radiation. In addition, one has to bear in mind that the younger the skin becomes, the more sensitive it becomes.
The invention is not limited to the ingredients indicated in the aforegoing but many modifications are possible within the scope of the appended claims. For instance, numerous other additives than those mentioned may be used to obtain favourable qualities. For instance, the product may be supplemented with perfumes, buffered, diluted with water, and in this connection it should be pointed out that these additives serve to have an effect on certain qualities of the product without changing its effects on the skin, for instance qualities that make the product more easy to apply or increase its shelf-life. It goes without saying that the concentrate may be added to creams as well as to lotions.
