Abstract

In order to avoid corrosion damage in the non-bath galvanizing , using hand-held electrodes, of e.g. iron adjacent to masonry, aqueous ammonia is used as the starting electrolyte and zinc as the cathode, so that only inert zinc oxide and no corrosive salts remain behind after drying. Several hand-held rub electrodes are described which render possible the use in practice of the new, simple, low-conductivity electrolyte. In the simplest case, the hand-held electrode comprises a piece of zinc wire (1) 3 mm in diameter and 40 mm long, one half of which passes hermetically (3) through the bottom of a soft plastics beaker (2) 5 mm wide so that the rim of the beaker extends 2 mm beyond the end of the wire, the free end of the wire being connected to positive (4), and the beaker holding the electrolyte (E). The electrode with its bevelled mouth can be used equally well in any position. It gives about 40 mA at 12 V, and one fill lasts for more than 5 min. Zinc plated on to polished iron (5) adheres and covers well, is ductile and is suitable for the direct application of a paint coating.
