Definitions

  • This invention relates to a method of producing structures for slow release of chemicals such as biologically active chemicals.
  • Biologically active chemicals include pesticides, fungicides, plant nutrients, mould retardants and* algicides for example. There may also be a requirement for slow-release of other chemicals and it is to be understood that the method of the invention may be applicable on this
  • Biologically active chemicals often need to be released slowly over a period of time for optimum effectiveness.
  • a plant is susceptible to attack by a particular fungal growth, the plant may need to be protected by a fungicide throughout the growing season.
  • Plant foods need to be provided at a relatively slow but controlled rate.
  • algicides may need to be used in the water of a fish farm but may themselves have a harmful effect- on the fish if released in large doses.
  • SUBSTITUTE SHEET Conventionally, slow-release chemicals have been incorporated in, for example, porous materials from which they are gradually leached by the action of water.
  • a typical example is the plant food spike of porous wood into which a plant food has been absorbed and from which it gradually leaches over a period of weeks or months.
  • a method of producing a structure for the slow release of a chemical such as a biologically active chemical, the method comprising absorbing the chemical into a microporous carrier and incorporating the carrier into a base material capable of controlled breakdown to release the chemical.
  • the microporous carrier is a substance as defined in the claims of British patent no. 1576228.
  • the carrier has a density within the approximate range of 0.9 to 0.945 gm/cc 3 , a void volume of substantially 75%, a cell size within the approximate range of 0.5 to 6.0
  • the base material may comprise a pl astics material which may be biodegradable or slightly solubl e .
  • the structure for slow-rel ease of the chemical may be in the form of a foi l , a f ibre or a sponge-l ike material or may be provided as a coating on another substrate . In each case , the . material presents a relatively large surface to volume ratio . However , in some appl ications , the structure may be provided as a sol id block or pel let depending on the particular use to which it is to be put .
  • Embodiments of the invention wil l now be described by way of example only .
  • a plant nutrient and a wide-range pesticide are both absorbed into a microporous carrier of the type claimed in British patent no. 1576228.
  • This microporous carrier can absorb up to two-thirds of its own weight of such chemicals and, in a finely divided form, can be mixed into a base material .
  • the base material is a plastics material of a biodegradable type.
  • the resulting material is formed into a strip by extrusion, for example, and the strip is divided into small sticks, each of which can be inserted into the soil of a pot plant.
  • the plant nutrient and insecticide are then gradually SUBSTITUTE SHEET released by breakdown of the structure under the action of water as the plant is watered. This enables the plant to be cared for without feeding or spraying, merely by the application of the usual quantity of water.
  • the technique may be useful in domestic and in commercial horticulture.
  • an algicide is incorporated in the microporous carrier.
  • the algicide bearing carrier is then mixed with a base material of a suitable plastic such as polyethylene or polypropylene.
  • the resulting plastics material is formed into filaments or fibres and woven or otherwise formed into net.
  • a fish farm tank can then be. protected by means of the netting which prevents fish from being seized by fish-eating birds such as herons.
  • the action of the water in the fish farm tank slowly releases an algicide which prevents algae from bulding up in the water due to the shading effect of the netting.
  • algicide is used by direct application into the water then this can harm the fish or render them unfit for consumption. However, by slow release over a period of months from the shade netting, adequate quantities of algicide can be used to prevent algae growth without harmful effect on the fish or the consumer.
