Definitions
- a technical problem is one of realizing that from all available low-viscosity oil products at least one category has shown itself to be particularly suited as a main ingredient in an ointment or like product, such as to afford good adhesion, good lubrication and good protective properties, even in a highly viscous state.
- a further qualified technical problem is one of realiz ⁇ ing that a composition having one or more of the afore- said technical effects will also have a healing effect on animals, such as the hocks of horses and like quadrupeds.
- a technical problem is one of providing an ointment which is not only effective to heal sores on animals but also on human beings and also which will counteract and heal the formation of cracks on hooves and feet pads.
- Another technical problem is one of realizing that a special composition proposed in accordance with the invention will give clinically established healing results when applied to inflamed sores, and even to sores which are highly inflamed.
- a technical problem is one of ⁇ realizing that the proportion of tallow should exceed the proportion of zink-white by a predetermined factor, selected from well-defined ranges.
- Another technical problem is one of realizing the ad ⁇ vantages that can be gained when the oil-product con ⁇ tent of the composition comprises an oil which posses ⁇ ses good adhesion properties and good water-separation properties, such as steam-cylinder oil, having a vis ⁇ cosity of between 10,000 and 3,000 ⁇ St at room tempera ⁇ ture, and to realize the advantage that is gained when the tallow proportion comprises sheep tallow.
- a technical problem is one of realizing the necessity of reheating the resultant mixture of heated oil product and heated tallow to a temperature of at least twice the temperature of the .mixture prior to adding the zink-white while stirring the mixture, whereafter the total mixture must be heated still further before allowing the mixture to cool while stirring.
- the present invention relates to a composition which will function as an ointment, salve, unguent or the like and which includes an oil product, particularly a ubricating oil product present in a proportion of at least 50% by volume, with the remaining proportion, or at least the major part of said remaining proportion comprising a viscosity-enhancing mixture or composition.
- the viscosity-enhancing mixture comprises, at least substantially, tallow and zink-white, with the propor ⁇ tion of tallow being greater than the proportion of zink-white.
- the tallow proportion approximately exceeds the zink-white proportion by a factor of two, say by a factor of between 1.5 and 2.5.
- the proportion of oil products shall comprise 60-70% by volume, the tallow proportion 8-22% by volume and the zink-white proportion 8-15% by volume.
- the oil-product proportion will preferably comprise an oil which exhibits good adhesion properties and good water-separation properties, and that the tallow proportion comprises sheep tallow. It is particularly proposed that the oil product used is so-called steam cylinder oil.
- the invention also relates to a method of preparing a composition adapted as an ointment and the main ingredient of which includes at least 50% by volume of an oil product and the remaining part of which, or at least the major part of said remaining part comprises a viscosity-enhancing mixture of tallow and zink-white.
- the invention proposes a particular mixing and tempera- ture schedule, in which the oil product is heated to a temperature of between 60°C and 100°C, such as to ob ⁇ tain a viscosity of between 100 and 250 cst, in which the tallow proportion is also heated, in which the oil product and tallow proportion are mixed and heated, while stirring, to at least double the temperature or to a temperature above 180°C for the mixture, and in which zink-white is then added while stirring and the mixture is heated further, whereafter the mixture is allowed to cool while stirring.
- the inventive method proposes that the oil pro ⁇ duct shall be heated to about 70°C and the tallow pro ⁇ portion heated to about 95°C, before being mixed while stirring.
- the resultant mixture is further heated immediately to about 220°C, whereafter zink- white is added. Subsequent to adding zink-white, the mixture is heated to about 250°C.
- the thus heated mixture is allowed to cool and it is proposed that when introduced into a storage vessel, the mixture will have a temperature of less than 45 ° C, say about 38 ° C .
- inventive ointment is very friendly to the skin and has been found to have infection-healing properties.
- the present invention relates to a composition which functions functions as an ointment, a salve, -an unguent or similar product and which shall include a low-vis ⁇ cosity oil product, particularly a lubricating oil product, in a proportion of at least 50% by volume, and at least the major part of the remaining part of said composition comprises a viscosity-enhancing mixture.
- the viscosity- enhancing mixture shall comprise at least substantially of tallow and zink-white, with the tallow proportion somewhat exceeding the zink-white proportion.
- the oil pro ⁇ ducts are present in a proportion of 65-70% by volume, the tallow proportion is 19-20.5% by volume, and the zink-white proportion is 10-13.5% by volume.

- the oil product is a steam cylinder oil sold by TEXACO under reference "650 T Cylinder Oil 1000%, that the tallow is sheep tallow, and that the zink-white is a commercially available zink-white designated "green seal”.
- the oil product is present in a proportion of about 67% by volume, that the sheep tallow is present in a pro- portion of 19% by volume and that the zink-white is present in a proportion of 14% by volume.
- the invention also relates to a method of preparing a composition adapted for use as an ointment or like preparation and including at least 50% by volume of an oil product and at least the major part of the remain ⁇ ing part of which composition comprises a viscosity- -enhancing mixture of tallow and zink-white.
- the oil product is heated to a temperature of about 70°C, so as to obtain a viscosity of between 100 and 250 set.
- the tallow proportion preferably sheep tallow
- the tallow proportion is heated separately. There is nothing to prevent the sheep tallow proportion from being heated to a tempera ⁇ ture slightly above the temperature of 70°C of the oil product, say to a temperature of 95 ⁇ C.
- the heated oil product and the heated tallow proportion are mixed while being rigorously stirred, and are heated to at least twice the temperature of the mixture, say to a temperature of 220 ⁇ C.
- Zink-white is then added while stirring, and the resul ⁇ tant mixture is further heated, say to a temperature of 250 ⁇ C, and is maintained at this temperature for a short duration. This duration is normally at most 10 minutes, normally about 5 minutes, whereafter the mix- ture is allowed to cool while stirring.
- the mixture can be cooled with the aid of induced cooling.
- the resultant composition shall be introduced into suitably containers or vessels at a temperature of about 38°C. It should be noted that in this particular case the temperature of the composition should not be above 41°C when introducing said composition into a storage vessel or container.
- the composition then soli ⁇ difies to grease consistency at room temperature.
- the proposed ointment-like composition can also be used as a lubricating grease and as an anti-corrosion agent.
- the filler is preferably introduced during the cooling process.
- the filler can be added within the aforesaid temperature limits, depending on the structure, eva ⁇ poration point, etc. of the filler.
- the filler is pre ⁇ ferably introduced at a temperature beneath 100°C.
- composition now described can also be used as lubricant in bearings, especially slide bearings in water.
- the composition can also be used as a protecting layer for eliminating or reducing rust or other oxides on iron or steel products.
