Der Maiszünsler (Ostrinia nubilalis) ist ein Schädling, dessen Raupe in dickstengeligen Pflanzen frißt, wie beispielsweise Mais, Hirse, Hanf, Hopfen, Bohnen Baumwolle, Dahlien und anderen Pflanzen, und dabei großen Schaden auf den Anbauflächen dieser Pflanzen anrichtet. Es ist bekannt, die Bekämpfung des Europäischen Maiszunslers umweltfreundlich mit Schlupfwespen (Trichogra ma evanescens maidis) vorzunehmen, die - in Kartonkapseln zu je etwa 500 kurz vor dem Schlupf stehenden Trichogrammen in die betreffende Kultur ausgebracht - aus ihren Wirtseiern schlüpfen, die Kartonkapseln durch Öffnungen verlassen und sich auf die Suche nach den Eigelegen des Maiszunslers begeben. Die Schlupfwespenweibchen sind darauf angewiesen, ihre eigenen befruchteten Eier in die Eier einer anderen Insektenart abzulegen. Hierdurch werden die Eier des Wirtstiers für dieses unbrauchbar, so daß auch im Fall des Maiszunslers dann keine Larven mehr schlüpfen können. Die Kapseln mit den Trichogrammen in deren Wirtseiern werden bisher von Hand in die Kulturen ausgebracht. Hierfür steht wegen des bevorstehenden Schlupfs nur ein kurzer Zeitraum von 2-3 Tagen zur Verfügung, der häufig noch dadurch eingeschränkt wird, daß die Kapseln nicht kurz vor, während oder kurz nach Niederschlägen ausgebracht werden dürfen.
