Abstract

The object of the present invention is to facilitate the production of master tapes in studios for producing audio and/or video information carriers thereform, by reducing the time and increasing the quality of producing the master tapes. The blank tapes are made first by making a tape web (21) including a support layer and a sensitive layer, winding the tape web (21) on a winding roller (22), unwinding the tape web (21) and cutting it into large diameter tape coils (26) by a cutter (25) and then separating each tape coil (26) by a cutter (27) into individual tapes (27) which are inserted in cassettes. The tape (1, 6, 12) is coded with codes (4, 5, 10, 11, 14, 15) directly during the process of its making, either during the winding on the winding roller (22), or during its unwinding and before cutting by the cutter (25), or before separating by the cutter (27).

A Method of and an.Arrangement for Manufacturing of Coded Taυes
Technical Field
My invention relates to a method of manufacturing and an arrangement for manufacturing of coded tapes for sub¬ sequent production of audio and/or video information carriers. For production of audio and/or informations carriers, it is necessary to have coded master tapes.
Background Art
At the present time the tapes which are used as mas¬ ter tapes for audio and video recording are produced as blank tapes without codes. For recording audio and/or video information of such tapes, which later on will be used as master tapes for production of compact discs, laser video discs, video tapes, movie tapes and other carriers of audio and/or video information, the thus made blank tapes must be first provided with codes, in¬ cluding such codes as a time code, a code for controlling movement of a tape, a code for searching a desired point of the tape, etc. Cprestriped, etc.).
The above mentioned codes are applied on the blank tapes after their manufacture has been completed, in res¬ pective audio and video recording studios. This process possesses considerable disadvantages, A person who is to perform recording on the master tape has to spent a considerable time for coding the blank tape prior to the recording itself. This time can be commensurate with the time of the recording itself. The recording equipment is occupied with the coding process, instead of performing the recording. The quality of the production can suf¬ fer in the event if respective codes are applied with¬ out high accuracy in a studio. The process of coding is rather complicated and clearly foreign to the main purpose of recording studios, namely recording of audio and/video information.
Disclosure of Invention
In accordance with the present invention, I provide a method of manufacturing of coded tapes for subsequent production of audio and/or video information carriers, in accordance with which a blank tape is made, the blank tape is coded, and the coding is performed during the making of the blank tape. I also provide an arrange¬ ment for manufacturing of coded tapes for subsequent production of audio and/or video information carriers, which has means for making a blank tape, and means for coding the blank tape during its making.
My improved method and arrangement possess the advan¬ tage that a person who is to produce a master tape in a studio for subsequent recording of audio and/or video information on respective carriers no longer has to spent his time on coding the tapes in the studio. The time of production is considerably reduced, its quality is increa¬ sed and the studio equipment is used more efficiently.
Brief Description of Drawings
The details of my invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view which schematically shows a tape for audio recording with some codes; Figure 2 is a view which schematically shows a tape for video and audio recording with codes? Figure 3 is a view which schematically shows a tape for video recording? Figure 4 schematically illustrates a method and an arrangement for manufac¬ turing of coded tapes in accordance with one embodi¬ ment of the present invention? Figure 5 schematically shows the present invention in accordance with ano¬ ther embodiment? and Figure 6 is a view which sche¬ matically shows the present invention in accordance with a further embodiment.
Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention Referring now to the drawings. Figures 1-3 show three types of master tapes for production of audio and/or video recording on information carriers. A tape shown in Figure 1 is identif ed as a whole with reference numeral 1 and can be used for an audio rec- ording. It has two audio tracks for left and right audio recording, a track 4 for applying a time code, and a track 5 for applying (recording) another code such as for example a tape movement controlling code. It is to be understood that tracks for other codes can be provided as well.
A tape shown in Figure 2 is identified as a whole with reference numeral 6 and can be used for audio and video recording. It has two audio tracks 7 and 8, a video track 9, a time code track 10, and tape move- ent controlling code track 11. Finally, a tape shown in Figure 3 is identified as a whole with reference nu¬ meral 12 and can be used for video recording. It has a video track 13, a time code track 14, and a tape move¬ ment vontrolling code""track 15. A tape for audio and/or video recording is first made in a conventional manner as a taoe web which usually includes a main support layer, a front sensitive layer which is sensitive to the action of a recording medium, and a rear layer which is suitable for writing etc. for identification purposes. The thus produced tape web which is identified with reference numeral 21 is wound on a roll . In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention shown in Figure 4, required codes are recorded (applied) on the tape web 21 during its wind¬ ing onto the roll 22. The tape web 21 will be later se- parated into a plurality of individual large diameter tape coils, and then the coils will be separated into a plurality of individual tapes to be inserted into cassettes. The coding of the tape web 21 can be performed by a plurality of individual coding elements 23 arranged at locations corresponding to the future individual ta¬ pes. Each coding element applies the respective codes on its specific location corresponding to the future ta¬ pe. On the other hand, a single coding unit 24 can be provided, which simultaneously applies the codes on all locations.
In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention shown in Figure 5, required codes are applied at a different point of the manufacturing process. As can be seen from this Figure", the tape web 21 is sepa- rated by a cutting device 24 after its unwinding from the roller 22 into a plurality of large diameter tape coils 26. The required codes are applied on the tape web 21 du ing its unwinding from the roller 22 and before its cutting by the cutting device 25. As can be seen from the drawing, the coding can be again performed either by a plurality of coding elements, or by a single coding unit. Finally, in accordance with a further embodi¬ ment of the present invention shown in Figure 6 the coding is performed in a further point of the manufac¬ turing process, downstream of the above described points. As can be seen from this Figure, the large diameter coils 26 are subdivided into a plurality of individual tape 27 by a cutter 28, and the individual tape is introduced into a respective cassette 29. The coding in accordance with the embodiment shown in this Figure is oerformed during unwinding a tape from a respective one of the tape coils 26 and before inserting the separated tape 27 into the cassette 29. If the step of separating the tape coils into indivi¬ dual tapes and insertion of the latter into indivi- dual cassettes is performed as a final step of the manufacturing process for all tape coils simultaneous¬ ly, then again either a plurality of coding elements arranged at a plurality of locations corresponding to the individual tapes can be used, or a single coding unit can be used. If however each tape coils is unwound indi¬ vidually to be cut for making individusl tapes to be inserted into individual cassettes, then a single coding element 30 can be used.
It is to be understood that the process of making a blank tape can be different from that desribed here- inabove. What is important in the method and the arran¬ gement in accordance with the present invention is that the coding is always performed during the process of making the tape, or in other words, before a final step of this process. For the coding, coding elements of known type can be used. Por example, for optical coding, known light sources operating in a pulse mode can be used. For magnetic coding , known individual magnetic head can be used. They can be assembled in a single coding unit. The coding can be performed also immediately after the separation of the tape web into the large diameter tape coils.
