Definitions
- the present invention relates to wheel rims in particular to wheel rims intended for arduous conditions.
- wheel rim is formed from a single piece of steel that is rolled into the shape of a hoop of an appropriate profile to permit mounting and demounting of tires.
- This arrangement may be used in relatively light load applications but where the intended use is for heavier vehicles, a three-piece wheel rim assembly has been utilized.
- Such an assembly utilizes a base that is rolled to provide an upturned edge to define a first bead seat and a band having a rolled upturned edge to define a second bead seat. Axial movement between these two components is prevented by a locking ring.
- This arrangement is generally satisfactory for trucks and the like but where conditions require heavier duty rims it has not been found feasible to form the base and band by conventional roll forming techniques. Accordingly, a five piece rim assembly has evolved in which the flanges are separate from the base and band respectively. This permits much heavier wheel rims to be formed to meet the arduous conditions of, for example, earth moving vehicles.
- the five piece rim has operated satisfactorily until the use of radial ply tires has become more pronounced. It has been found with radial ply tires that the inherent flexing of such tires has caused premature failure of the wheel rims due to fretting that occurs between the flanges and the base and band respectively. Moreover, the flanges tend to creep around the flange in the circumferentia direction which causes further wear.
- a wheel rim having an annular base with a radially outwardly directed surface, a first flange secured by welding to the circumferential edge of said base and extending radially outwardly from the said surface, an annular band slidably received on the radially outer surface of said base at a location spaced from said first flange, a second flange member secured by welding to said band to define a bead seat between said band and said second flange and releaseable lock means operable to retain said band on said base.
- a wheel rim generally designated 10 comprises an annular base 12 having a radially outwardly directed surface 14.
- One edge of the base 12 is upturned as shown at 16 to provide a radially extending portion.
- a flange 18 is located adjacent the upturned edge 16 so that the edge 16 and the radial inner portion of the flange 18 overlap.
- the flange 18 is a generally inverted J-shape so that the base 12 and flange 18 co-operate to define a bead seat of conventional profile.
- the flange 18 is secured to the base 12 by a pair of welds 20 and 22, respectively, to inhibit movement between the flange and the base.
- Weld 20 is located at the radially inner end of the flange 18 and extends continuously around the periphery of the base 12.
- the weld 22 is located at the junction between the upturned edge 16 and the flange 18 so that the welds 20 and 22 are radially spaced from one another. This arrangement of welds 20, 22 inhibits relative movement between the base 12 and flange 18 but also prevents rocking of the flange 18 on the base 12.
- a bead seat band 24 Located on the opposite side of the base 12 to the flange 18 is a bead seat band 24.
- the bead seat band 24 is slidably received on the base 12 and has a tapered section to facilitate assembly of the band 24 with a tire in place.
- a groove 26 is formed in the base 12 to receive an o-ring 28 that acts as a seal between the band 24 and the base 12.
- the base 12 is also provided with a second groove 30 in which is seated a lock ring 32 to inhibit actual movement of the band 24 off the base 12.
- the outer edge of the base 24 is upturned as indicated at 36 to provide a radial extending edge.
- a second flange 34 is mounted on the base 24 adjacent the edge 36 and secured thereto by welds 40 and 42.
- the weld 40 is located at the radially inner edge of the second flange 34 and the weld 42 located at the radially outer edge of the edge 36 so that radially spaced locations are provided for the welds 40, 42.
- the welds 40 and 42 extend continuously around the periphery of the wheel rim 10 to inhibit rocking motion of the flange 34 relative to the band 24.
- the rim shown in figure 1 and 2 is made from components, each of which may be rolled with conventional rolling techniques with a thickness sufficient to satisfy the arduous requirements of earth moving vehicles.
- the assembly of the flanges 16 and 34 on to the base 12 and the band 24 respectively by welding avoids the problems associated with the prior art five piece wheel and inhibits the rocking motion found between the flanges 16, 34 and base 12 and band 24.
- the base 12 is first inserted through the tire so that one bead of the tire abuts the flange 18.
- the band 24 is then inserted onto the outer bead of the tire and moved axially until the lock ring 32 can be inserted in the groove 38. Disassembly is the reverse of the above with the band 24 initially being released by compression of the tire so that the two bead seats are adjacent to the first flange 18.
