Description
Ventilation trap door
The present invention relates to a ventilation trap door which is provided with an air filter, sound-absorbing means and a closeable gate.
This type of ventilation trap door is known from Finnish Patent publication 74109. In that publication, the sound-absorbing means comprises a metal plate which is fixedly mounted in a ventilation opening in a manner that there remain gaps on its sides for the entrance of air. A drawback in this solution is an inadequate possibility of controlling the air flow rate since the adjustment is merely effected by opening the trap door more or less. Also the sound absorption is left only to the plate used as a sound-absorbing means and this does not always provide a sufficient absorbing effect. Also, the replacement of air filters requires working tools as the sound-absorbing plate must be removed prior to the replacement of filters.
An object of the invention is to provide a ventilation trap door which filters the incoming air , reduces the noise coming in along with air and which also offers a possi¬ bility of precisely controlling the rate of through- flowing air.
According to the invention, this object is resolved in a manner that the outer surface of a trap door . is fitted with a chute-like element to form a channel between it¬ self and the outer surface of the trap door for passing air from one section of the trap door to another and further through the trap door by way of an opening made therein, that the channel is made of a sound-absorbing material or it is provided with a sound-absorbing material, and
that in the trap door opening, in front of the opening on the inner surface of the trap door or in the channel is fitted a regulator for controlling the air flow.
The purpose of a channel formed on the outer surface of or inside a trap door is to prevent the direct entrance of air and, thus, noise. By circulating air suitably through a channel insulated with a sound-absorbing ma¬ terial the sound waves attenuate upon impinging on the walls of the channel. The channel length must natural¬ ly be optimized between sufficient sound absorption efficiency and unnecessary air drag.
One preferred embodiment of the invention is designed in a manner that a regulator is mounted in the trap door opening, in front of the opening on the inner surface of the trap door or in the channel through the intermediary of an adjusting piece. The adjust¬ ing piece is preferably fastened to the inner surface of the trap door, said adjusting piece in turn facil¬ itating in a simple and advantageous manner the con¬ nection of various regulators for controlling the air flow.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
fig. 1 shows a ventilation trap door according to one embodiment of the invention in a vertical sec¬ tion.
The basic structure of a ventilation trap door shown in fig. 1 comprises a conventional handle-fitted ventilat¬ ion gate which is provided on the outdoor side, on the left side in fig. 1, with a rainwater grate designated with reference numeral 1 , on the oppiste side there is a closable gate 2 with an air filter 3 therebetween.
In a ventilation trap door as shown in fig. 1, the outer surface 4 of a gate 2 is fitted with a chute-like element 5 for building a channel 6 between itself and outer surface
4 of gate 2. Air is passed from one section of gate 2 to another in channel 6 along outer surface 4 of the gate and further through gate 2 by way of an opening 7 made therein. The chute-like element 5, which in this embodiment covers nearly the entire outer surface 4 of gate 2, has its inner surface coated with a sound-absorbing material 8.
When circulating air through channel 6 insulated with sound absorbing material 8, the sound waves traveling along with air attenuate upon impinging on the channel walls. The gate 2 itself, which is usually filled with mineral wool, is
normally sufficient for absorbing the noise coming in directly through the gate. The sound-insulating qualities of gate 2, in terms of such noise entering directly through a gate, are further improved by a chute-like element 5 covering nearly the entire outer surface 4 of gate 2. If necessary, the sound-insulating qualities of gate 2 can still be substantially improved by applying inside or on
the surface of a gate one or a plurality of layers made of a sound-absorbing material. Such a layer can be preferably made of a metal plate fitted inside gate 2.
Alternatively, channel 6 can be arranged entirely inside
In the embodiment shown in fig. 1, in front of opening 7 of gate 2 to inner surface 10 of gate 2 there is fastened a regulator 9 which, in this case, comprises an adjustable grate. The alternative devices for use as a regulator include also other manually adjustable
valves or, for example, a thermostatic valve which automatically controls the flow rate according to temperature differences. Also a fan can be used as a regulator and/or a flow booster.
For standardizing the mode of fastening various regu¬ lators it is preferable to use an adjusting piece (not shown) to which can be readily and conventionally fastened optionally various regulators. Then, the fastening of an adjusting piece itself, e.g. with
screws in front of opening 7 to inner surface 10 of gate 2, can always be effected the same way, whereby the structure of gate 2 does not require any modifications when using various regulations 9.
If desired, channel 6, opening 7 or regulator 9 of gate 2 can be fitted with a heater element (not shown)
