Definitions

  • Such an apparatus permits a sealing strip, being made of an adhesive tape and a ribbon-shaped material such as paper tape, to be applied round e.g. a . flexible container such as a plastic bag twisted together.
  • a similar apparatus is known from the Netherlands patent application no. 8500050.
  • the rotor is provided with locking means fitted on the rotor bush and intended to make sure that the rotor is prevented from performing any return rotation.
  • a rubber ring attached to the hub of the reel carrying adhesive tape, there are means, a rubber ring i this case, through which the reel is in frictional contact with the housing and which prevent the reel from running freely and the adhesive tape from being unwound undesirably.
  • the apparatus is used hurriedly in order to apply a large number of sealing strips round bags in a short time, the reel containing adhesive tape will yet revolve too far as a result of the attendant jerks at the adhesive tape, by which the unwound adhesive tape is pulled back to the reel.
  • the apparatus of the type described in the opening lines is provided with locking means located in the recess and, in engagement with the rotor spokes, acting as a ratchet gear.
  • the rotor spoke strikes the locking means, which does not only stop any further reverse rotation of the rotor, but also makes that the tape consisting of ribbon-shaped material and adhesive tape brought together is pinched between the rotor spoke and the locking means, which prevents the ribbon-shaped material and the adhesive tape from reverting to the respective reels on the one hand, and effects an improved bond of the ribbon- shaped material and the adhesive tape on that place on the other, hand.
  • the locking means acting on the rotor and the rubber ring fitted on the hub of the reel may be dropped.
  • a practical embodiment of said locking means is obtained by designing these means as a strip-shaped member of which one half has a partly arc-shaped profile and, contiguously, the other half has a recedingly bent lip-shaped end.
  • a particularly advantageous construction of the described practical embodiment of said locking means is obtained when said strip-shaped member is made of a resilient material and the second half of said member is positioned in the feeding means for the ribbon-shaped material and is pinchingly against the ribbon-shaped material. This provides a solution to overcome the second disadvantage of the known arrangement.

  • the recess 6 made in the shape of a substantially straight slot causes that, as the bag 2 enters the recess 6, said bag 2 is deeply pressed into the space encompassed by two rotor spokes 11, so that the bag 2 is covered with adhesive tape 12 over its full circumference.
  • the rotor spokes are dimensioned such that it is precluded that the bag 2 might be taken downward round the outer ends of spokes 11 and an insufficient amount of adhesive tape might arrive at bag 2.
  • the supply of single-sided adhesive tape 12 is from a reel 13 which is accommodated by a guide 14 located in the box unit 7.
  • a rubber ring 16 may be put on hub 15 of the reel 13, through which ring the reel 13 is in frictional contact with the guide 14, thus preventing adhesive tape 12 from rotating freely and from unwinding undesirably.
  • the .rotor 10 may be ._advantageously provided with retaining means, such as, fitted on the rotor shaft, a retaining clip which does not permit any free rotary motion of the rotor 10. • the cutting blade 27 is out of finger's reach (especially for the sake of children), whereas bag 2 can reach cutting blade 27 for performing the cutting operation.
  • Chamber 26 is accessible through cover 30 fastened to it by means of screws.
  • the cutting means 20, too are accessible through a detachable cover 31.
  • the apparatus 1 is provided with a ledge 32 being perpendicular to the recess 6 and protruding into the recess 6, which ledge causes that in its vicinity the adhesive tape and paper tape are sharply bent so that the bag 2 and the free-moving parts of the adhesive tape 12 on one side and of the paper strip 17 on the other side are properly pressed against each other, whereby the sealing strip, to be formed of adhesive tape and paper strip, will tightly embrace the bag 2.
  • the mainly straight recess 6 is curved sideward.
  • the bag 2 already enclosed by the sealing strip of adhesive tape 16 and paper tape 17 has already passed the ledge.32.
  • Fig. 4 also clearly shows that the materials 12 and 17 bonded together are kept taught when the cutting means 20 are operated. Consequently, actual cutting by means of the cutting blade will take place and the operation of these cutting means 20 will require a lower force, which results in a sharp line of cut. Having cut the sealing strip, the cutting means 20 return by the action of a spring 33 into the condition of rest shown in Fig. 2, where the arm part 22 comes to lie against a stop 34 on the box unit 8.

  • the supply of paper tape 17 to the feeding means 19 takes place through a passage 41 made in the cartridge 35 and provided with fully solid sides preventing any undesired transverse displacement of the paper tape 17.
  • Such an embodiment has the disadvantage that, in the event that the bag 2 is rushed through the recess 6, the reel 13 containing the adhesive tape 12 continues to turn through a certain angle due to jerks occurring then, by which the unwound length of adhesive tape 12 is pulled back to the reel 13.
  • the box unit 8 is provided with means 42 projecting into the recess 6 and co-operating with the rotor spokes 11 to act as a locking mechanism and prevent the rotor 10 from rotating reversely.
  • means 42 projecting into the recess 6 and co-operating with the rotor spokes 11 to act as a locking mechanism and prevent the rotor 10 from rotating reversely.
  • An embodiment of said locking means 42 is achieved by designing these means as a strip-shaped member 43 as shown in Fig.6.
  • the strip-shaped member 43 of resilient material has an arc—shaped profile of a certain length 44 and, contiguously, a recedingly bent lip-shaped end 45.
  • This lip-shaped end is to engage with spokes 11 of rotor 10, and that in such a way that rotor 10 is not impeded in its rotational motion during the feeding of a bag 2 through recess 6, but that it is impeded during any reverse rotation that might occur subsequently.
  • This is achieved by positioning the non-bent portion of the strip-shaped member in passage 41 of the feeding means 19 and by securing the other end 47 of the strip-shaped member 43 in a bifurcated clamping device 48.

Only when a rotor spoke 11 presses the lip-shaped end 45 against the ledge 32, the strip-shaped member 43 will come loose from the upper wall 49 for a short duration, permitting the ribbon-shaped material 17 to pass for a short length. This prevents forces developing jerkily from propagating to the ribbon-shaped material 17 wound on reel 18 and from making the material unwind from the reel for a great length.
  • the lip-shaped end 45 may be advantageously provided with a top edge 50 increasing in thickness or curvature in the direction of the rotor spokes 11, by which it is .achieved that the. non—bent portion 46 of the strip—shaped member 43 is removed from the upper wall 49 only for a very short time.

  • Pushing the strip-shaped member 43 away from the paper tape should take place through the intermediary of the bag 2 directly or indirectly making use of any pushing means to be moved by the bag. • the apparatus may also be implemented such that in the box half 8 there is a hub on which a separate reel containing paper tape may be placed and that the passage 41 with the locking means 42 are part of the box half 8.

  • the guard 51 may be fitted again in its proper place.
  • the guard may be pushed onto the housing side wall, in this embodiment preference is given to a guard designed as a sliding cover to be pushed into the opening.
  • the guard 51 also comprises a strip 52 being perpendicular to the sliding cover, which prevents the reel 13 from abandoning the box unit 7.
  • This embodiment is furthermore characterised by the presence of a plurality of cavities having pear-shaped holes 53 in the bottom part of the apparatus 1, which enables the apparatus 1 to be wall-mounted by means of screws.
