Definitions
- the present invention relates to improvement of work safety and g particularly to an arrangement for a shield to be advantageously .
- chip-forming machine tools as lathes, cutters, drilling and grinding machines and similar to protect the operator both against flying chips and rotating machine parts.
- a substantial potential danger factor is also formed by the rotating bed portion, to which the workpiece is fastened, or the rotating working blade.
- Horizontally settable shields are mainly used in lathes and si ⁇ milar machine tools as a so-called chip shield, in which case the shield can be moved along a horizontal supporting rail.
- shields of this art are the chip shields described e.g. in the Patent Application FI-820252 and Patent Scriptures FI-65934 and GB-1558513.
- One of their manor disadvantages is that the security of the machine tool operator cannot be guaran ⁇ teed, if the workable piece extends outside the chip shield,
- the object of the present invention is to eliminate such disad ⁇ vantages and weaknesses characteristic to previously known shields and to provide an improvement for settable machine tool shields, which above all would facilitate and lighten the trans ⁇ fer of the shield and would enable both rapid locking and swiftly releasable interlock of the shield enhancing thus sig ⁇ nificantly the probability that the shield would also be used in practice.
- One of the advan.tages of the invention is that the shield can be set and locked to the desired shielding position without any keys or other auxiliary equipment, so that the machine tool operator should only give the right direction for the shield upon its transfer.
- the lightness in use, simple structure and easy operation of a machine tool shield provided with the arrange ⁇ ment according to the invention give the best guarantee, that this protective device would also be used when the machine tool is operating.
- FIG. 1 shows as a perspective view a milling machine shield equipped with the arrangement according to the invention to lock the shield and to lighten its transfer

- the shield 4 has been suspended at the end of an intermediate shaft 1 comprising the first shaft portion 13 and the second shaft portion 14 jointed as turnable relative to each ' other.
- This joint between the shaft portions 13 and 14 has been pro ⁇ vided with a tightening means e.g. a winged nut, so that the joint can be tightened as immobile. Because of- the lockable shaft portions 13 and 14 the shield can be fitted rapidly and conveniently on the one hand to machine tools with different dimensions and on the other hand the fitting of the shield can fundamentally be facilitated both for frequently repeated simi ⁇ lar and often varying work phases.
- the other end of the intermediate shaft 1 can be fixed to the frame of the machine tool by a fastener, part 2, preferably comp ⁇ rising two segments, in which case the segments formed as e.g. a U-piece have been axled as rotatable in relation to each ot ⁇ her.
- the first shaft portion 13 composed of a metal element tapering towards its end away from the fastener part 2 and bent as a U-profile is fixed at its side walls for instance by spindle joints turning like a lever to the lugs of the upper
- the second shaft portion 14 of the intermediate shaft 1 compri ⁇ ses three bar elements connected by welding to each other and forming an assembly resembling a three-branched letter Y.
- One branch O ' f this assembly has been jointed to the free, i.e. away from the fastener part 2 turned, end of the first shaft portion, so that the loint in question can be tightened as immobile.
- One branch of the remaining two of the three-branched assembly has been connected by a spacer 3 to the shield 4 that can be moved over the actual working area and the other branch is formed as a handle facilitating the moving of the shield 4 and acting moreover as a fastening support of the facilities according to the invention lightening the moving of the shield 4.
- the shield 4 is connected to the second shaft portion 14 by a. spacer 3.
- a ball-headed projection 15 has been placed to the edge of the shield 4 and the spacer comprises two halves 16 and 17 between the base surfaces of which has been formed recessions corresponding both the end of the second shaft portion 14 and the projection 15-
- the spacer 3 has also been pro ⁇ vided with a locking means 10, as a tightener screw, winged nut etc., to tighten the halves around the end of the second shaft portion 14 and the projection 15.
- a locking means 10 as a tightener screw, winged nut etc.
- the safety means accord ⁇ ing to the invention is provided with lightening means for locking and moving the shield.
- these means include two telescopically moving power apparatus 8 and 9, e.g. pressure springs, which are commercially available from._several equipment manufacturers.
- Pressure springs 8 and 9 have been fitted successively in the embodiment accord ⁇ ing to FIG. 1 between the fastener part 2 and the first shaft portion 13.
- the free end of the pressure spring 8 has been axled to the spindle between two U-pieces of the fastener part 2, which spindle can for this pur- pose be equipped with lugs.
- a control valve 18 and means 19 to alter the operational space of the control, valve 18. and therefore to lengthen or shorten the pressure springs 8 and 9 and respectively to tilt the intermediate shaft 1 have been fitted betwe.en them.
- Means 19 for altering the operational state of the control valve 18 comprise according to the preferred embodiment of the inven- tion a hand-operable handle part fastened to the branch of the shaft portion 14 and acting as a gripping handle facilitating the moving of the shield 4, and a transmission organ, e.g. a cable moving inside a mantle pipe and transmitting the movement of the handle part to the control valve 18. Then by pressing the handle part the movement of the mentioned transmission organ opens the control valve 18 and the shield 4 can be transferred to the desired position and by releasing the handle part the shield 4 is locked to its selectee position.
- a transmission organ e.g. a cable moving inside a mantle pipe
- the shield shown in FIG. 2 is intended to be fitted to a lathe.
- the left-hand one functions as a bed shield 5 transferable to the bed part on a slide rail and at that point turnable over the bed part
- the right-hand one as a chip shield being either transferable on the slide rail or fastened to a blade carriage and moving thus along with the blade carriage to be turned over the working area.
- the chip shield 6 and the bed shield 5 can thus be moved, either one or both depending on the horizontal extent of the working area, to cover the working area, so that when long pieces are being worked the chip shield 6 covers thus the.working area and the bed shield 5 protects the rotating bed part or blade of the machine tool.
- both the chip shield 6 and the bed shield 5 have been according to the invention fastened to the supports thereof by a turning mechanism provided with lightening means for their movement.
- the bed shield 5 shown in FIGS 3 and 4 is composed of a metal sheet with about 2 mm thickness, compressed to a decklike form.
