It is also known to provide a combine harvester having an elevator that collects both the grain passing through the concave and the straw from the rear of the concave and feeds this to straw walkers. Loose grain falls from the end of the elevator and from the grain pan below the straw walkers, onto a pan that directs the grain into a shaker shoe. In order to assist removal of chaff from the grain before it reaches the shaker shoe an additional fan is provided below the elevator to direct air at the grain and straw mixture as it passes over the end of the elevator. However, the presence of the straw in the path of the air blast tends to hinder the pre-cleaning action. The combine comprises a chassis carrying a threshing cylinder 1 between the front drive wheels 2 and a crop collecting table 3 that is connected to the chassis so as to pivot about the axis of rotation of the cylinder 1. Crop fed to the cylinder by the table is threshed between the cylinder and an open grate concave 4. Straw from the rear of the cylinder passes onto straw walkers 5 that operate to move the straw rearwards and free loose grain from it in the process. This grain falls onto a grain pan 6 that reciprocates so as to feed grain forward onto a further grain pan 7 that reciprocates so as to feed the grain rearwards to a shaker shoe 8.The combine comprises a chassis carrying a threshing cylinder 1 between the front drive wheels 2 and a crop collecting table 3 that is connected to the chassis so as to pivot about the axis of rotation of the cylinder 1. Grain that falls through the concave 4 collects on a continuous band-type elevator 9 that carries it upwards and drops it onto the front of the pan 7 beneath the straw walkers. A pre-cleaning fan 10 is located beneath the elevator 9 and directs a blast of air rearwards through the gap between the elevator and pan 7 so as to clean the grain falling from the elevator. This air blast passes rearwards between the straw walkers 5 and pan 6 and performs a further cleaning action upon the grain falling from the straw walkers.
