It is also known to provide a combine harvester having an elevator that collects both the grain passing through the concave and the straw from the rear of the concave and feeds this to straw walkers. Loose grain falls from the end of the elevator and from the grain pan below the straw walkers, onto a pan that directs the grain into a shaker shoe. In order to assist removal of chaff from the grain before it reaches the shaker shoe an additional fan is provided below the elevator to direct air at the grain and straw mixture as it passes over the end of the elevator. However, the presence of the straw in the path of the air blast tends to hinder the pre-cleaning action.
