Be it known that I, ALBERT RoMAINE 'lAL-LMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Combination Fountain Pen and Pencil, of which the following is a spcciiication f .y
The device `forming the subject matter of this applicationis a combination fountain,v pen and pencil. I am aware of the fact that, generally stated, an article comprising a barrel or holder, provided at one end with a pen and at the other end with a pencil, is old in the art. To such a broad combination, no clailnis laid. A combined article of thesort alluded to is, however, a useful structnre,.and this application proposes, as
one of its objects, thel provision of a device,- which, as an artlcle of manufacture may be used as a combined pen and pencil,.the construction being such that the length of the pen and pcm willnot be increased materially, notwithstanding the fact that it com'- bines the two instrumentalities above alluded to, and notwithstanding the factthat it includes a means for filling the pen, anda means for' feeding the lead in the pencil.
Another object of the invention istoimprove the constructionof-the pencil portion of the device, notably in so far'as Ythe leadfeeding mechanism is concerned.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that sort to which the invention appertains. y f

The part 3 of the barrel has a reduced end is provided with, an internal thread 6, which may be pressed into the sleeve.
A tube 7 is rotatably mounted within the sleeve 5 and is secured at its outer end to a tip 8, havin a bore 9 which is co-axial with the bore o the tube 7 the tip having an annular fian'ge v10 surrounding the reduced end 30 of the barrel-part 3. a longitudinal slot 11, rshown best in Figures 6 and 3.
The lead-feeding means includes a plunger 12 disposed within the tube 7 and equipped at its forward end with a split resilient socket 14, adapted to hold the lead 15 which, in the operation of the device, is advanced through the bore 9 ofthe tip 8, .as occasion may demand. facilitating the sliding movement of the plunger along the bore of the tube 7. In Fig. 2, the lunger 12 is shown in a retracted-position for two reasons: first, in order that the outline of the'plunger may appear clearly; and, secondly, in order that the functions ofl divers parts of the device may be' explained advantageously hereinace of the tube 7. The lunger 12 termi after. The plunger 12 and, more specifically, the resilient arm 17 thereof, 1s provided with a transversely extending fin 19 having notches or seats 20. The fin 19 slides in the slot 11 of the tube 7, the notches or seats 20 co-operating with the thread 6 of the sleeve 5. Since the sleeve 5 is fixed to the part 3 of the barrel, and serves as a mounting to permit the rotation of tube 7 with respect Ato the barrel, and since the plunger 12 is constrainedA to follow a right line movement in the tube 7, it isobvious Ythat when relative rotation between the tip 8 and the part 3 of the barrel is brought about, the

The pro'ection 16, being formed by curving or ben ing the plunger 12, renders the forward end of the plunger comparatively rigid, the lead 15 being held always in such a position that it will enter the bore 9 of the tip 8, notwithstanding the fact that the arm 17 of the plunger is resilient.

Especial attention is directed to the fact that when the plunger 25 is retracted, as a'`oresaid-,y and when the parts 2 and 3 of the barrel are again assembled, thesleeve 5 is received within the plunger. As a consequence the article embodies. in a combined pen and pencil, longitudinally movable lead- Jfeeding and pen-charging means, telescoped with respect to each other, the length of the article being cut down accordingly.
If the notches 2O in the plunger 12 do not happen to be engaged witlrthe thread 6 of the sleeve 5 when the plunger 25 is slid about the sleeve 5, then, as indicated in Fig. 2, the plungerA 25 will flex the end 17 of the plunger 12 sulicieutly to bring the notches into the position shown in Fig. 2, and the friction between the plunger 25 and the part 18 of the plunger l2 will advanceY the plunger 12 until the notches 20 catch the thread 6.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
. 1. In a combined pen and pencil, a barrel, longitudinally movable lead-feeding means in the barrel, and longitudinally movable pen-charging means in the barrel, the leadfeeding means and the pen charging means being telescoped within the barrel with respect to each other, to minimize the length of the article.
2. An article of manufacture for use in the makingot a combined pen and pencil having a minimum length, comprising barrel members; means for connecting said members detachably; a piston co-operating with one barrel member and including a tubular plunger `slidable in both barrel members; undylead-feeding mechanism embodying a sleeve whereon the plunger is telescoped, the sleeve being secured to the other barrel member. 3. An articleof manufacture for use in the making of a combined pen vand pencil having a minimum length, 'comprising barrel members; a combined guide and couplin fixed to one barrel member land received removably in the other barrel member; a
