The airmbesrwhicn supply tie-'are box receive air throughcross pipes J frorn'pip'es L'terminati'ng at theirjfront ends 'in tunnels conveniently placed in the frontpart of the A locomotive and ladapted to create a forced air lthefforced. feed' ceases when the v.loconarrative,
stops, I provide special means forcoutinuii'g' the airblast in an automatic man'ner'asfollows: Pisa box casing or .an enlargedpart of pipe L, having` in its bottom iamop'ening o vat its outer en'dtliat-plays overftliiiori. of;
. 9' 4feed by themovementof the locomotive: """As u lip e-and closes the opening o when valve M -is down. i. This valve is fulcrumed at u andha's a lever extension on the opposite side of its fulcrum that'is connected by a link with 5 a lever arm n on theend of the axis 'cfa but-- terfiy valve m in a steam boiler pipe N. The steampipe runs from the boiler and terminates in a nozzle within the casting P behind the valvelM.` The outer end of the lever arm ro 'n is provided with a connterweight r which slightly overbalances the weight of -valve M and holds it shut and butterfly valve m open.
The action of these parts isl as follows: Then theA locomotive is in motion the air x driven in the funnels K f orces down-the valve M, throwingit wide open, closing with lip v, the orifice 0, and lifting the arm n, and closingthe steam valve'. Air is now being .supf
plied ina forced feed to the-funnel by the zo movement ofthe locomotive. When the locomotive stops, the -ai'rvpressure on valve 'M being removed, counterweight-r drops down and closes valve M; opens air inlet O,and`
also opens thev steam valve m; Steam now z 5 flows through nozzle W, andi sucking air Ain at O, suppliesa forced feed of air j ust so long as the locomotive is stationary. When the locomotivestarts again, the impact of air on' valve .Mopeus it again,I the'steam supply is v 3o cut off, and airis fed by the mere passage `of,
the locomotive again.` In this way thegdevice is made to work automatically, the forced airfced being continuously maintained in a v perfectly automatic'"manner, no matter 3 5 whether the locomotive ismoving or stationary. In casefthere is too strong a draft in the pipe L, as might occur with a head wind, a relief valves, orescape damper, may be provided to allow the escape of a'nydesired 4o portion of the blast.
As amodification of my invention, instead of using steam from pipe N, I may connect this pipe N to the airreservoir that supplies the brakes, andy allow a blast of air to proceed directly therefrom without the indue tion of air by `the steam jet. ,i v
It will be understood that although de# scribed as applicable to locomotive boiler f urnaces, the several features of my invention 5o are net limited thereto, but may, be applied to marineor other forms o f boilers.,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is-'v l 1.
