Description

-J. BY. SLAWSO'N'. Parle-Box. No. 8,988. Reissued Dec. 2,1879.
. fare-box.
UNITED'STATES PA'IEN'I'l OFFICE,
Jenn" nlrvsLAwsoN, or New YORKQN.- Y.
iMPRoveM ENT Inv inane-Boites).
Specification fornngpart of Letters Patent No. 69,263, dated September 24, 1867 Reissue No. 8,988, dated December $1879; application filed-October 13,1879.
'To allfwhom it may concern: Be it known'that I, JOHN B. SLAwsoN, of
` ANew York, in the county of New York and. -;State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FareBoxes; and
' il .do hereby declare that the following is a full.,
clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertain's'to make and vuse the saine,
reference being had to the ,accompanyingdraw-v ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica-,l
, tion, in whichof'Figft. Fig. 2 represents cross-section of ,tlie`same, thep'lane of section beingindicated .bythe line y y, Fig. 4. Fig. 3 represents a .tr'ont elevation ot' the same-t-hat is to say, an
4elevation of the` side next the driver. Fig. 4
represents a horizontal sectional view ot the same, the plane of section being indicated by .the linee.' c ot' Fig. 1.'
'lhe sameletters of reference indicate the saine parts.
'lliisinvention relates to anew and improved mode of lighting fare-boxes whereby the lamp is placed altogether out of the way of the farebox, so as not to obstruct the inspection of the contents of the box,'and.so that iight is thrown .into the fare-box and upon` the money-trap to completely illuminate the same.
vThe invention consists in combining, with a 'fare-box, a lam p and refieetor so arranged that 'the light from the lamp is reiiected directly inpon :the money-,trap or arrest-platibrm, in order to suiiciently .illuminate it, that the fare deposited may be'prperly inspected before'. being depositedin the money-drawer below.
It also consists in a new and improved mode ot' applying alamp to the illumination of a` This improvement consists in makingathiev lamp-case and fare-,box two separate and distinct devices, and then so combining'the twov that the light from the one is thrown directly npon the money-arrest of the other, that the tare may be inspected before being deposite in the drawer below. i.
The fare-box may be -of any suitable con-.
\ struction, and thisinventicm is not intended' as an attachment to: anyone particularkind of fare-box, but may be used on fare-boxes of -ordinary or suitable (soustraction.A 'f y A A represent theside walls of acar or om,` nibus fare-box of suitable: construction.
the front, and C vtherearorinsidewall, of D is .thelrnoney-trap, which' maybe hinged orattached andoperated in j any suitable mann'ei. The-wallsy Band C are, above the money-trap,-made of glassor other trans pa-rent niateriahfw 'that'-the passengers, as
well as the driver, may be enabled to inspect the conten-tsof the box.
To one of the side walls A of the fare-box I is attachedv a small-box or apartment, E, the
inner wall ot'which i'sprovided with an opening direetlyopposite a corresponding opening formed inthe side wallA, to -which the box E is attached. Th'isopenin g in the side wall A is closed by-a glass plate, F, or by any other transparent or 'other material through which the light maybe allowed to pass from chamber E to the fare-box. The front wall of the apartmentV E-may also have a pane of glass,-G', or its equivalent, to give a direct light to the driver.
' lamp, H, ofsuitable construction, is placedV into the box or apartment E, and its light is' thrown, by a strongvreilector, I, of suitable construction, through the glass F upon the -money-trap I), so that the moneynpon the same can easily befinspeeted from the inside and outside. If desired, a reflector may also be arranged opposite to the paneG, Such attachments E may be arranged ou both or only on one side of the fare-box, as may be desired.`
The top of the' apartment Eis'open to allow the escape of sinokefrom the-lamp.
That the lsmoke may beentirely kept o ut of *I the fare-box is another great advantage of my invention.
It will easily be seen thatthe drivers eyes y .will no t bebllldcd by the light ofthe 'lamp H while he is ,inspecting the in side of-thefare-box.
If desired, fa'pane :may also. be arranged on the inside of .the apartment E, to throw light into the omnibus or ear, oronemay have an inside and kanother an outside pane, where two apartments, E; are used.
'Any one ofthe outer walls of the apartment E may be hinged, so that it can be opened to remove 'the lamp for cleaning and other pu'rposes. f
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a Ifare-box, of a lamp and reflector so arranged that the light from the lamp is reflected ou the stop or rest where the fare, after being' dropped vinto 'the box, temporarily remains for inspection by the driver or passen ger,'before b eiugdeposited in the drawer or receptacle below, substantially as described. y
2. The apartment E, provided with au opening for the passage of light toward the-farebox, 'and with a redactor, I, on the opposite wall, the lamp 'H being arranged between, substantially as described.
3. The apartment E, provided with 011.611- ings for the passage of light towardA the farebox and toward the iront, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and deseribed.
In testimony that I'eiaim the foregoing I have hereunto set -lny hand this 22d day of August, 1879. JOHN BfSLAWSON.
