IMPROVEMENT in;, -issn sfirrsnsns FO Boo-rs me Specilicationforming part of Letters am no. 102,720, dated May-3, 1310; Reissue No. 8,477, November 5, 1878 application filed May 4,1878. 1 I5-- ."l'll all whom may concern;- I
Be it knownth'at I, GEORGE V. SHEFFIE D, of Northbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements fin Counters for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forniing part of this specification. u
Figure 1 represents my improved counter in side view. Fig.2 is a longitudinal section of improved counter for boots and shoes, and in the peculiar manner hereinafter explained for v makingthe same. I
' Heretofore counters; for boots and shoes have been made of several pieces: of leather pasted together, or of leather, leather-board, or pasteboard, of the proper thickness. These were cut to the proper shape,"and the edges scarfed so as to form a thin edge.v The process r'eqniresmuch timeand labor and also considerable skill to fitethem properly, and even then they cannot be made. with any great I degreeof uniformity. I y
In the drawingaFig ni-e 1 represents one of my improved counters of the form required I for a boot, the endsA A bcingformednearly 7 square, so as to be stitched into the siding.
For shoes the counters would be of a'some I what difi'erent'form, but would be made inthe same manner, which is as follows: A concave die is cut in the-required form of the counter,
- the edges of which are to be beveled ofi',;as in-f dicated at a a. This die is providedwith pre jecting pins, which enter the stock or material of the counter stthepoints indica ed t b, to hold it in place-withinthe die dining the '1 process otf manufacture.
The material-6t"whichjthe'counteristojbe.
'made is cut into labia-peasant upon the concave die, which 'isthen passed under a hammer or other, suitable pressing device by'meansof a movable carriage,;aud
the material is thus forced firmlyintothe die,
after which the die with .theformed counter-is passed under 'a cutter or a planing-'ki ife, which removes all superfluous stock fi'onithe counter, leaving it in proper condition for.gnse, making a counter of the'proper thicknessgffind also giving the proper bevel or scarflng' around the: edges a a. T; A'counter thus 'm'adeisisnperior to counters made in the ruinaryzmanssrgim asmnch asthe flbers of' t rt lyimsfle h s whi ebeveled'surtaceis made Counters can be made compressing the material, and thus a better f and cheaper counter or stifiener producedthan', 1-
has heretofore been possible. The cost is --re-' duced and. great uniformity secured, while the, compression increases the stiffness and durability of the counter. 7 Having thus described Patent- I 1. ,As an" improved" article of a .heel-stifl'ener one surface of whichis formed with compressed-beveled edges and the oppoa f site sn'rfacefmade'plain by cutters, sub tiallyassetforth. a
.. '2, 11m or routing heelstifi 'eners cousisting infsubjecting the blank to: com-i prcssion, and forming compressed beveled edges,'an'd removing surplus material onthe opposite side of. the blank by knives orjcutters while the counter or stifl'ener is retained in the die, substantially as set forth.
