ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HOLLOW-AXLE IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON'AXLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 108,607, dated October '25, 187 0; reissue No. 4,584, dated October 10,
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM ARNOLD LEWIS, of Chicago, in the county of (look, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in WagonAXles, of which the following is a specification:
In the drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the spindle and part of the axle. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a forward axle on a smaller scale; Fig. 3, a cross-sectional view at as :0, Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4,'a cross-sectional view at y y, Fig. 2.
The first improvementI claim tohave made is in the use of-tt pipe or hollow tube, at, having the ends swaged to-ai taperto-tbrm. the jonrnat or spindle d without the use of skeins or other external additions, as bearings, for the boxes to wear on, as shown in Fig. 1. The spindle d may wrought-iron collar 0 is shrunk" on to form a butting-ring or shoulder for the hub to run against. Another iinprovelnentl claim to have made is in the king-bolt .clip and the arrangement of the bolt at the center of the axle. The king-bolti passes through the clip on, which is held in place 1 ent, is

by the bolts 0. The upper part of the olipfurnishes a seat for the end of the reach, and the whole arrangement strengthens the axle at the the ends of the axles to receive the not which holds the wheel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- -itxle made from tubin l. A wagon g by swagi'ng 2.The combination of the clip m, bolts'o, kingbolt '5, and axle a, constructed and arranged sub- 'stantinlly'as and for the purposes set forth.
