Letters Patent No. 95,950,dated October 19,1869 ;v reissue No. 4,200', dated December .13, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN GEARINGsFoR MowlNG-M'AcHlNEs.
The `Schedule referred' toin these Letten Patent and making part 'of the same.
To all whom it may conce/rn Bc it known that I, Jnnn V. Stumm, o f Litchfield, in the county of Medina and-State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful I mprovementin Mowing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and vexact description thereof,
which will enable others skilled -i'n 'the art to make 'f and use the same, referentie being vhad to the accoml panying drawing forming part of this specification, in
which- Figure l is a tletailc'd.vi ew illustrating my iinrovements arts beineY broken awa lto show the construction;
Figure 2is a detailed-vertical section ofl the same,
taken through lines xx, lig. l.

Mv invention has for itsj especial object -to improvei the'constructbn of the'gearing ot''mowing-machtnes,l so 'that a fast or slow movement may be given to the cutters -at the will-of the operator without any break of power as vbetween the motive and effective part of the vmachine, which is never out of gear, either'. before, after, or while shifting from ,one degrec of` rnovementto another', thus constitutinga new element in shifting-gear, which may be also appliedwith advantage to other gearing when a different rate of movement is and' -1t consists in the cornbinationiot wheels, or sets of cogs,
sometimes required;
several geara'nd several pinion-wheels after more fully described.
A represents the drivefshaft ofa nlmving-machinc, to which motion is given in the ordinary manner;
B is-the drive or -maiu gear-wheel, which is attached to shaft A.'
Upon the face'of wheel B are formed different concentric gear-wheelsor different sets of' cogs, G D E,
with the drive-wheel and with the shaft-, as herein so that, as the `shaft vEis driven from one or the' other of said gear-wheels, it-may receive a greater or lesser velocity, as may be required F is the shaft, from which motion "is given to the cutters, and which revolves in bearings attached to the frame of the. machine.
Upon theshaft Fis placed a number of gear or pinion-wheels, G H- I, equal in number to the number of get tr-wheels C D E .upon the wheel B, and which are placed upon the shaft F in such positions as Vto mesh into the teeth of the said gear-wheels C 1) E, respectively.
` J is a collar, placed upon the shaft li near its inner end, and which is secured to said shaft F by a setscrew or other convenient means.
v'To the. side of the-lcollar J toward the wheel G is attached apawl, which takes hold of the ratchetteeth formed uponori-attached tothe said gear or pinion-Wheel G, so that, when the shaft F is at rest,
the pinion-wheel G may take hold of saidpawl and carry the shaft F with it in its revolution; but when the shaft Fis movingA faster than the wheel G, the said pawl may slip over said ratchetfteeth, allowingl the wheel G to. continue to revolve at the same rate of speed as before.
` The pinion-wheels H and I, which mesh into the A gear-wheels D and E, respectively, run loosely upon the shaft F, except when one or the other of said pinionfwheels is connected with shaft F by the clutch K, so as to carry lthe said shaft with it in its revoln# tion.
'lhe Iclutch -K is connected with the s haft F bya feather'and groove, su that it may al\va vs revolve with "said shaft, and at' the same ltime have a longitud-inal movement, so'tl1at it may-be thrown into gearwith one or the other of the'pinion-wheels H I, according as it is desired to have the shaft F revolve with a fast or slow movement.
L is a lever,'which is pivoted to some suitable snpport atached to the frame of the .1nachine, and the lower or forked end of which rides upon the clutch K.
.The clutch K and lever-L are so arranged that. when the said lever-is in a vertical position, the said clutch will gear into neither of the wheels H I, allowing them to run freely upon the shaft F, the said shaft F in that case being driven by the wheel G.
Bymoving the upper-end of the lever L in one or the other direction, the clntehK will be brought into contact with one or the other of the wheels H I, ac cording to the rapidi-ty of motion which it is desired to give the shaft 13, a nd consequently to the cutters. '.lhe lever L is heldl securely in any position into which it may be adjusted hy the catch M, attached to 'the support to which the said lever L is pivoted.`
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 1. Tile combination of clutch 'K and pinion-wheel H with the ratchet spur-gear G and pawled fast collar J on shaft F,'substantially as shown and sct forth.
2. rPhe combinationl of wheel B, having the concen- 'tric gears C D E thereon and arranged 'on shaft A,
with the pawled-fast collar J, ratchet spur-gear G,
and clutch and gears H K I, arranged on shaft F, Iall' operating together in the manner set' forth.
