Abstract

A new cultivar of Dasiphora plant named ‘Bailpine’ that is characterized by its compact, mounded form, its tinted with blue-green new foliage and dark green mature foliage, and its double flowers that are bright golden yellow in color.

Variety denomination: ‘Bailpine’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Dasiphora fruiticosa. The new cultivar will be referred to hereafter by its cultivar name, ‘Bailpine’. ‘Bailpine’ is a new cultivar of deciduous shrub grown for landscape use.

The new cultivar is the result of a controlled breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Morden, MB, Canada. The intent of the breeding program is to develop new cultivars of Dasiphora with double flowers and unique flower colors. ‘Bailpine’ originated as a seedling that arose from seed planted from open pollination of an unnamed and unpatented plant of Dasiphora fruiticosa from the breeders' program designated as No. 98176 in 2000. The male parent is therefore unknown. ‘Bailpine’ was selected as a single unique plant in July of 2002 from the resulting seedlings.

Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished by softwood cuttings by the Inventor in Cottage Grove, MN in July of 2003. Asexual propagation by softwood cuttings has determined that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new shrub rose. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘Bailpine’ as a unique cultivar of Dasiphora.

• • 1. ‘Bailpine’ exhibits a compact, mounded form.
  • 2. ‘Bailpine’ exhibits matte, tinted with blue-green new foliage and dark green mature foliage.
  • 3. ‘Bailpine’ exhibits double flowers that are bright golden yellow in color.

The female plant of ‘Bailpine’ differs from ‘Bailpine’ in having flowers that are light yellow in color with more petals per flower. ‘Bailpine’ can also be compared to the Dasiphora cultivars ‘Bailmeringue’ (not patented) and ‘Goldfinger’ (not patented). ‘Bailmeringue’ is similar to ‘Bailpine’ in having double flowers and a compact and mounded plant form. ‘Bailmeringue’ differs from ‘Bailpine’ in having smaller flowers that are pale yellow in color, and foliage that is light green in color. ‘Goldfinger’ is similar to ‘Bailpine’ in having blue-green foliage and a compact and mounded plant form. ‘Goldfinger’ differs from ‘Bailpine’ in having single flowers that are darker golden yellow in color.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

The accompanying color photographs illustrate the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of the new Dasiphora. The photographs were taken of a 5-year-old plant of ‘Bailpine’ as grown outdoors in a 2-gallon container in Cottage Grove, Minnesota.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The following is a detailed description of 5-year-old plants of ‘Bailpine’ as grown outdoors in 2-gallon containers in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with The 2015 Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

• General description:
  • • Blooming period.—2 weeks from June and intermittently through September.
    • Plant type.—Deciduous shrub.
    • Plant habit.—Compact, mounded.
    • Height and spread.—An average of 45 cm in height and 51 cm in width as grown in a container, reaches about 91 cm in height and spread as grown in the landscape.
    • Hardiness.—At least in U.S.D.A. Zones 3 to 8.
    • Diseases and pests.—None observed.
    • Propagation.—Softwood cuttings.
    • Root description.—Fine, fibrous, 155C and 200B.
    • Growth rate.—Moderate.
    • Root development.—Cuttings initiate roots in 4 weeks and a fully rooted young plant is produced in 60 days.
