Abstract

A new cultivar of Pittosporum plant named ‘PTG19’ that is characterized by glossy green leaves with light silver margins, short internodes, a fast growth rate, a small overall size, a compact habit and good drought tolerance.

Description

Botanical classification: Pittosporum tenuifolium.
Variety denomination: ‘PTG19’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Pittosporum plant botanically known as Pittosporum tenuifolium and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘PTG19’.
‘PTG19’ was discovered as a naturally occurring whole plant mutation of Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Irish Luck’ (not patented) in 2014. The new cultivar was discovered as a single plant in a population of Pittosporum ‘Irish Luck’ plants in a cultivated area of Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. The new cultivar was discovered in a commercial plant nursery container field.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘PTG19’ first occurred by semi-hardwood cuttings in 2014 in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Since that time, under careful observation, the unique characteristics of the new cultivar have been uniform, stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The following represent the distinguishing characteristics of the new Pittosporum cultivar ‘PTG19’. These traits in combination distinguish ‘PTG19’ as a new and distinct cultivar apart from other existing varieties of Pittosporum known by the inventor.
    • 1. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits glossy green leaves with light silver margins.
    • 2. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits short internodes.
    • 3. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits a fast growth rate.
    • 4. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits a small overall size and a compact habit.
    • 5. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits good drought tolerance.
The closest comparison cultivars are Pittosporum ‘Stephen's Island’ (not patented) and the parent plant Pittosporum ‘Irish Luck’. ‘PTG19’ is distinguishable from ‘Stephen's Island’ by the following characteristics:
    • 1. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits green leaves with light silver margins. In comparison, the leaves of ‘Stephen's Island’ are matte green with darker silver margins.
    • 2. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits short internodes. In comparison, the internodes of ‘Stephen's Island’ are longer.
    • 3. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits a fast growth rate. In comparison, the growth rate of ‘Stephen's Island’ is slower.
    • 4. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits a small overall size and a compact habit. In comparison, ‘Stephen's Island’ has a larger overall size and a more open habit.
‘PTG19’ is distinguishable from the parent plant ‘Irish Luck’ by the following characteristics:
    • 1. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits a smaller overall size than the overall size of ‘Irish Luck’.
    • 2. Pittosporum ‘PTG19’ exhibits a compact habit. In comparison, ‘Irish Luck’ has a more open habit.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
The accompanying photographs illustrate the distinguishing traits of Pittosporum ‘PTG19’.
The photograph of FIG. 1 shows an overall view of a 6 year old plant.
The photograph in FIG. 2 shows a close-up view of the foliage.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance, it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT
The following is a detailed description of the new Pittosporum cultivar named ‘PTG19’. Data was collected in Auckland, New Zealand from 6 year old outdoor field grown plants. The time of year was August and the average temperature was 14 degrees Centigrade during the day and 8 degrees Centigrade at night. The light level was natural light level. Color determinations are in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2015 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The growing requirements are similar to the species. ‘PTG19’ has not been tested under all possible conditions and phenotypic differences may be observed with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, however, without any variance in genotype.
