Abstract
A new and distinct Abelia cultivar named ‘MINACARA1’ is disclosed, characterized by a compact and semi-erect plant form. Plants have three distinctive foliage seasons during the year. Foliage color is orange in Spring, yellow and green-orange in Summer, and red to maroon in Autumn. Flowers are of medium size, colored light lavender and white. The new variety is an Abelia, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Abelia grandiflora.
Variety denomination: ‘MINACARA1’.
The new Abelia cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor in La Menitre, France. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Abelia grandiflora varieties with colorful foliage and compact habits for container production. The crossing resulting in this new variety was made during July of 2010.
The seed parent is Abelia grandiflora ‘MINEDWARD’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,360, the pollen parent is Abelia grandiflora ‘Francis Masson’, unpatented. The new variety was identified as a potentially interesting selection during July of 2012. Selection was made at a research nursery in La Menitre, France.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘MINACARA1’ was first performed in August of 2012 at a commercial nursery in La Menitre, France. Vegetative soft wood cuttings used. Subsequent propagation has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
The cultivar ‘MINACARA1’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘MINACARA1’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘MINACARA1’ as a new and distinct Abelia cultivar:

- 1. Compacted, semi-erect plant form.
- 2. Three colors of foliage each year; orange in Spring, yellow and green-orange in Summer, and red to maroon in Autumn.
- 3. Medium sized flower colored white and light lavender.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘MINACARA1’ are similar to plants of the seed parent variety in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘MINACARA1’ differ in the following;

- 1. The new variety has foliage colored orange in Spring, yellow to green-orange in Summer and red to maroon in Autumn. The seed parent foliage is red and green in Spring and green in Summer and Autumn.
- 2. Foliage of the new variety is larger in both width and length than foliage of the seed parent.
- 3. Plants of the new variety are more vigorous than plants of the seed parent.
- 4. Plants of the new variety are more upright than the more rounded seed parent.
- 5. Flower color of the new variety is white and light lavender, flower color of the seed parent is single color, all light lavender.
- 6. Sepal color of the new variety is green and red with white, sepal color of the seed parent is darker, brown-red.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘MINACARA1’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent variety in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘MINACARA1’ differ in the following;

- 1. The new variety has foliage colored orange in Spring, yellow to green-orange in Summer and red to maroon in Autumn. The pollen parent has foliage colored light yellow-orange in Spring, light yellow in Summer, and green-orange in Autumn.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘MINACARA1’ can be compared to the variety Abelia ‘Rika1’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 20,568. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics however, ‘MINACARA1’ differs in the following:

- 1. The new variety has 3 seasons of different foliage color. This comparator has 2 seasons of foliage color.
- 2. Fall color of the new variety is red to maroon, Fall color of ‘Rika1’ is bronze-orange.
- 3. Flowers of the new variety are white and light lavender, flowers of ‘Rika1’ are white.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color typical Spring foliage of ‘MINACARA1’ grown outdoors, at approximately 2 years old.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2015, 6th edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘MINACARA1’ plants grown in a polyhouse in Grand Haven, Mich. Measurements were taken during May. The plants were about 2 years old in 5 gallon containers. The growing temperature ranged from approximately 18° C. to 27° C. during the day and 5° C. to 10° C. at night. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.

- Time to initiate roots: 1 to 2 months at approximately 18 to 27° C.
- Root description: Fibrous, thin root thickness. Some fleshy roots, also thin. Tan and white in color, not effectively measured with a color chart.
- Time to produce a rooted young plant: About 40 days at approximately 18 to 27° C.
- Plant type: Perennial flowering shrub.
- Age of plant described: Approximately 2 to 3 years old.
- Growth habit: Compact, semi-erect.
- Pot size of plant described: 3 gallon pot.
- Overall plant shape: Globular upright.
- Height: 62 cm.
- Plant spread: 86 cm.
- Plant vigor: Strong.
