Abstract
A new cultivar of Coprosma plant named ‘NGCOP7’ that is characterized by a compact habit, glossy leaves and upper side leaves that are green in color with tinges of grey-purple towards the margins and grey-red margins.
Description
Botanical classification: Coprosma repens.
Variety denomination: ‘NGCOP7’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Coprosma plant botanically known as Coprosma repens and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘NGCOP7’.
The new cultivar was discovered by the inventor in a cultivated area of Cambridge, New Zealand in 2013. ‘NGCOP7’ was discovered as a naturally occurring branch mutation of Coprosma ‘Tequila Sunrise’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 18,392).
Asexual reproduction by tip cuttings of the new cultivar ‘NGCOP7’ was first performed in 2014 in Cambridge, New Zealand. Since that time, under careful observation, the unique characteristics of the new cultivar have been uniform, stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The following represent the distinguishing characteristics of the new Coprosma cultivar ‘NGCOP7’.
-
- 1. Coprosma ‘NGCOP7’ exhibits a compact habit.
- 2. Coprosma ‘NGCOP7’ exhibits glossy leaves.
- 3. Coprosma ‘NGCOP7’ exhibits upper side leaves that are green in color with tinges of grey-purple towards the margins and grey-red margins.
The closest comparison cultivars are Coprosma ‘Scarlett O'Hara’ (not patented) and the parent plant Coprosma ‘Tequila Sunrise’. The new cultivar ‘NGCOP7’ is distinguishable from ‘Scarlett O'Hara’ by the following characteristics:
-
- 1. ‘NGCOP7’ has upper side leaves that are green in color with tinges of grey-purple towards the margins and grey-red margins. In comparison, the upper side leaves of ‘Scarlett O'Hara’ are red-orange with red margins.
The new cultivar ‘NGCOP7’ is distinguishable from the parent plant ‘Tequila Sunrise’ by the following characteristics:
-
- 1. ‘NGCOP7’ has young upper side leaves that are green in color with tinges of grey-purple towards the margins and grey-red margins. In comparison, the young upper side leaves of ‘Tequila Sunrise’ have green centers surrounded by yellow areas with orange margins.
2. ‘NGCOP7’ has mature upper side leaves that are green in color with tinges of grey-purple towards the margins and grey-red margins. In comparison, the mature upper side leaves of ‘Tequila Sunrise’ have green centers surrounded by red areas with red margins.
The accompanying photograph illustrates the distinguishing traits of Coprosma ‘NGCOP7’. The plant in the photograph shows an overall view of a 12 month old plant. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
The following is a detailed description of the new Coprosma cultivar named ‘NGCOP7’. Data was collected in Grand Haven, Mich. from 12 month old greenhouse grown plants in one gallon containers. The plants were grown under natural light. The time of year was Summer and the average temperature range was 18 to 27 degrees Centigrade during the day and 5 to 10 degrees Centigrade at night. No photoperiodic treatments or growth retardants were used. Color determinations are in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2015 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The growing requirements are similar to the species. ‘NGCOP7’ has not been tested under all possible conditions and phenotypic differences may be observed with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, however, without any variance in genotype.
