Abstract
A new cultivar of Daphne plant named ‘Sweet Amethyst’ that is characterized by a large number of light purple flowers that have a strong jasmine scent, a long flowering season and elliptic to obovate shaped green leaves.
Description
Botanical classification: Daphne odora.
Variety denomination: ‘Sweet Amethyst’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Daphne plant botanically known as Daphne odora and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Sweet Amethyst’.
The new Daphne was discovered by the inventor in 2009 as a naturally occurring single branch mutation growing on an individual plant of Daphne odora ‘Cameo’ (not patented). The cultivar ‘Sweet Amethyst’ was discovered in a population of outdoor container grown Daphne ‘Cameo’ plants in a cultivated area of Ashhurst, New Zealand.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘Sweet Amethyst’ first occurred by softwood cuttings in 2010 in Ashhurst, New Zealand. Since that time, under careful observation, the unique characteristics of the new cultivar have been uniform, stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The following represent the distinguishing characteristics of the new Daphne cultivar ‘Sweet Amethyst’. These traits in combination distinguish ‘Sweet Amethyst’ as a new and distinct cultivar apart from other existing known varieties of Daphne.

- 1. Daphne ‘Sweet Amethyst’ exhibits a large number of light purple flowers with a strong jasmine scent.
- 2. Daphne ‘Sweet Amethyst’ exhibits a long flowering season.
- 3. Daphne ‘Sweet Amethyst’ exhibits elliptic to obovate shaped green leaves.
The closest comparison cultivar is the parent plant Daphne ‘Cameo’. ‘Sweet Amethyst’ is distinguishable from ‘Cameo’ by the following characteristics: - 1. Daphne ‘Sweet Amethyst’ exhibits light purple flowers. In comparison, the flowers of ‘Cameo’ are pink.
- 2. Daphne ‘Sweet Amethyst’ exhibits a longer flowering season than the flowering season of ‘Cameo’.
- 3. Daphne ‘Sweet Amethyst’ exhibits flowers with a stronger scent than the scent of the flowers of ‘Cameo’.
The accompanying photographs illustrate the distinguishing traits of Daphne ‘Sweet Amethyst’.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
The following is a detailed description of the new Daphne cultivar named ‘Sweet Amethyst’ Data was collected in Ashhurst, New Zealand from 24 month old outdoor field grown plants. The time of year was Summer in the Southern Hemisphere and the average temperature was 26 degrees Centigrade during the day and 18 degrees Centigrade at night. Color determinations are in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2007 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The growing requirements are similar to the species. ‘Sweet Amethyst’ has not been tested under all possible conditions and phenotypic differences may be observed with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, however, without any variance in genotype.
