Abstract
A new Arenaria plant named ‘AMOZ0001’ particularly distinguished by the large sized white flower and compact plant habit that does not need cold temperatures to flower.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Arenaria montana.
Varietal denomination: ‘AMOZ0001’.
The present invention comprises a new Arenaria, botanically known as Arenaria montana, and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘AMOZ0001’.
‘AMOZ0001’ is a product of a planned breeding program. The new cultivar has a large sized white flower, compact plant habit and does not need cold temperatures to flower. ‘AMOZ0001’ originated from an open pollinated cross which took place in April 2007 in a breeding environment in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands. The female parent was the proprietary plant designated ‘K1243-1’, unpatented, with white flowers, is later to flower and has smaller flowers that that of ‘AMOZ0001’.
The male parent of ‘AMOZ0001’ is not known. The seed was sown in September 2007 and ‘AMOZ0001’ was selected as one flowering plant within the progeny of the stated open pollination in March 2008 in a controlled environment in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.
The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘AMOZ0001’ was accomplished when vegetative cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in March 2008 in a controlled environment in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.
Horticultural examination of plants grown from cuttings of the plant initiated in June 2008, and continuing thereafter, has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for ‘AMOZ0001’ are firmly fixed and are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
‘AMOZ0001’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity and day length.
A Plant Breeder's Right for this cultivar was applied for in the European Union on Sep. 20, 2010 (2010/1874). ‘AMOZ0001’ has not been made publicly available more than one year prior to the filing of this application.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be basic characteristics of the new variety. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes this Arenaria as a new and distinct variety.
The accompanying photographic drawing shows typical flower and foliage characteristics of ‘AMOZ0001’ with colors being as true as possible with an illustration of this type. The photographic drawing shows a flowering potted plant of the new variety, and a close-up of the flowers.
The plant descriptions, measurements and aforementioned photographs were taken in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands, in a greenhouse under natural light in July 2011. These plants used for the photographs and descriptions were about 3 months old, and were grown in an outdoor container trial.
