Abstract

A new and distinct hybrid of Sedum plant substantially as shown and described, with medium size, oval, glossy red brown leaves with cut edges, a low compact habit, showy maroon stems, dull rose pink flowers, and excellent vigor.

Description

Botanical denomination: Sedum sp.
Variety designation: ‘Chocolate Drop’.
Parentage: S. spectabile ‘Neon’ (unpatented)×S. telephium dark leaf.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Sedum and given the cultivar name of ‘Chocolate Drop’. Sedum is in the family Crassulaceae. Sedum ‘Chocolate Drop’ originated from an open pollinated cross between Sedum spectabile, ‘Neon’, unpatented, as the seed parent and a proprietary, unpatented dark leaf Sedum telephium as the pollen parent. Compared to Sedum spectabile ‘Neon’, the new cultivar has red brown rather than blue green leaves and duller smaller flower clusters. Compared to the Sedum telephium pollen parent, the new cultivar has a shorter denser habit, larger flower clusters, and rounder and lighter brown leaves. There are no similar commercial varieties known to the inventor.
This new and unique Sedum is distinguished by:
    • 1. medium size, oval, glossy red brown leaves with cut edges,
    • 2. low compact habit,
    • 3. showy maroon stems,
    • 4. dull rose pink flowers,
    • 5. and excellent vigor.
This new cultivar has been reproduced only by asexual propagation (division, cuttings, and tissue culture). Each of the progeny exhibits identical characteristics to the original plant. Asexual propagation by cuttings, division and tissue culture using standard techniques with terminal and lateral shoots, as done in Canby, Oreg., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations. The present invention has not been evaluated under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary with variations in environment without a change in the genotype of the plant.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
The photograph shows a two-year-old Sedum ‘Chocolate Drop’ growing in the ground in the garden fields on September 1st in Canby, Oreg.
