Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Sedum plant named ‘Coral Reef’, characterized by its upright and compact plant habit; freely basally branching habit; dense and bushy growth habit; attractive white-colored flowers with greyed purple-colored centers; and good garden performance.

Description

Botanical designation: Sedum telephium.
Cultivar denomination: ‘CORAL REEF’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Sedum plant, botanically known as Sedum telephium and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Coral Reef’.
The new Sedum plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands. The objective of the breeding program is to create new strong and healthy Sedum cultivars with numerous attractive flowers.
The new Sedum plant originated from a cross-pollination during the summer of 2005 in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands, of Sedum telephium ‘Purple Emperor’, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with Sedum telephium ‘Xenox’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 16,888, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Sedum plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands during the summer of 2006.
Asexual reproduction of the new Sedum plant by vegetative cuttings in a controlled environment in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands since the summer of 2008, has shown that the unique features of this new Sedum plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Plants of the new Sedum have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Coral Reef’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Coral Reef’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Sedum:
    • 1. Upright and compact plant habit.
    • 2. Freely basally branching habit; dense and bushy growth habit.
    • 3. Attractive white-colored flowers with greyed purple-colored centers.
    • 4. Good garden performance.
Plants of the new Sedum differ from plants of the female parent, ‘Purple Emperor’, primarily in flower and leaf color as plants of ‘Purple Emperor’ have pink-colored flowers and greenish purple-colored leaves.
Plants of the new Sedum differ from plants of the male parent, ‘Xenox’, primarily in flower color as plants of ‘Xenox’ have orange white to greyed yellow-colored flowers.
Plants of the new Sedum can be compared to plants of Sedum telephium ‘Postman's Pride’, not patented. Plants of the new Sedum and ‘Postman's Pride’ differ in the following characteristics:
    • 1. Plants of the new Sedum are more compact than plants of ‘Postman's Pride’.
    • 2. Plants of the new Sedum and ‘Postman's Pride’ differ in flower color as plants of ‘Postman's Pride’ have pinkish red purple-colored flowers.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Sedum plant, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Sedum plant.
The photograph on the first sheet comprises a side perspective view of typical flowering plants of ‘Coral Reef’ grown in an outdoor nursery.
The photograph at the top of the second sheet is a close-up view of typical inflorescences of ‘Coral Reef’.
The photograph at the bottom of the second sheet is a close-up view of the upper (left) and lower (right) surfaces of typical leaves of ‘Coral Reef’.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands, under commercial practice during the early autumn in an outdoor nursery with day temperatures ranging from 12° C. to 32° C. and night temperatures ranging from 6° C. to 18° C. Plants were one year old when the photographs and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2007 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
