Abstract

A new and distinct Lantana plant named ‘Balucwhit’ characterized by its white-colored flowers, dark green-colored foliage, and upright and spreading growth habit.

Description

Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Lantana camara.

Variety denomination: ‘Balucwhit’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Lantana plant botanically known as Lantana camara and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Balucwhit’.

The new cultivar was developed by the inventor in a controlled breeding program during April 2000, at Arroyo Grande, Calif. The objective of the breeding program was the development of Lantana cultivars with a well-branched and compact habit, continuous flowering and dark green-colored foliage.

The new cultivar was the product of the open pollination of the commercially available Lantana variety ‘Simon Red’ (not patented), characterized by its red/orange-colored flowers, and upright growth habit. ‘Balucwhit’ was selected in April 2001 at Arroyo Grande, Calif. as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the above stated open pollination and was initially designated ‘696-1’.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings taken since April 2001 at Arroyo Grande, Calif. and West Chicago, Ill. has demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all the characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of such asexual propagation.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment, such as temperature, light intensity, and day length without, however, any variance in genotype.

It was repeatedly found that the cultivar of the present invention:

• • 1. Exhibits white-colored flowers,
  • 2. Forms dark green-colored foliage, and
  • 3. Exhibits an upright and spreading growth habit.

Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the female parent primarily in flower color and growth habit.

Of the many commercially available Lantana cultivars known to the inventor, the most similar to ‘Balucwhit’ is ‘Robpatdov’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 10,882). However, in side-by-side comparisons, plants of ‘Balucwhit’ differ from plants of ‘Robpatdov’ in the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of ‘Balucwhit’ have larger leaves than plants of ‘Robpatdov’.
  • 2. Plants of ‘Balucwhit’ have fewer inflorescences per plant than plants of ‘Robpatdov’, and
  • 3. Plants of ‘Balucwhit’ have more flowers per inflorescence than plants of ‘Robpatdov’.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The accompanying photographs show, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color illustrations of this type, typical flower and foliage characteristics of the new cultivar. Colors in the photographs differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed description, which accurately describes the colors of ‘Balucwhit’. The plants were grown for 10 weeks in a greenhouse at West Chicago, Ill.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 1995 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary significance are used. The color values were determined on Jul. 22, 2003. The readings were taken between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. under natural day light conditions. The plants were produced from terminal stem cuttings taken from stock plants and were grown in a double polycarbonate-covered greenhouse in West Chicago, Ill. under conditions comparable to those used in commercial practice. The plants were grown in 10 cm pots for 10 weeks while utilizing a soilless growth medium. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at approximately 75°-85° F. (24°-29° C.) during the day and approximately 62°-68° F. (17°-20° C.) during the night. Greenhouse light levels were maintained at 4,000 to 10,000 footcandles during the day.

1. A new and distinct cultivar of Lantana camara plant named ‘Balucwhit’ substantially, as herein shown and described, which:

1. Exhibits white-colored flowers,

2. Forms dark green-colored foliage, and

3. Exhibits an upright and spreading growth habit.
