vwu 3. Nflbbgm DESIGN FOR A MOLD-BOARD.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part Cf the Same.
I, J AMES T. WILsoN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Shape or Configuration of a Plow-Share, adapted more especially for a rotary plow.
The nature of my design is represented in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a top or plan view of luy new form of plow-share.
Figure 2, a rear elevation thereof', looking thereat in the direction indicated by the arrow W, in fig. 1, viz: in the line of draft, or at right angles to the axis of revolution.
Figure 3 is also a rear elevation of the share, when it is viewed in a direction indicated by the arrow X, in iig. 1, viz: in a line parallel to the landl-side, or sti-:lightest side of the share.
Figure 4, a side elevation of the mold-hoard side, when viewed in the direction indicated by the arrow Y, in fig. 1, viz: at right angles to the line of draft or axis of revolution. Y
Figure 5, a front elevation of the share, looking thereat in the direction indicated by the arrow Z, in fig. 1, riz: in the line of draft, or at right angles to the axis of revolution, and
Figure 6 is also a front elevation thereof, when viewed from the direction indicated by the arrow O, fig. 1, viz: in a line parallel to the straightest side of the share.
r1`he transverse guide -lines in the drawing are drawn parallel to the axis about which the plowshares are to revolve, while those running the length of each sheet indicate the line of draft, or planes intersecting the axis of revolution, at right angles thereto.
A is the short or land-side of the plow-share. (See figs. 1 and 2.)
B, its mold-board or longer side, for turning over the soil. (See figs. l and 5.)
C, its front cutting-edge.
This front edge O of the plow-share is formed upon the mold side by a bevel eut back on the land-side, as illustrated in figs. 1, 5, and (i. It is inclined from a, vertical line, or a plane at right angles to the axis of revolution, toward the mold side B of the share, at an angle of about seventy degrees, (see fig. 6,) and its upper point projects forward beyond`its base at an inclination of about fifty-five degrees, with an inward curve from base to point, as illustratedn iig. 4.
From the cutting-edge O the lower edge b of the mold-board sweeps back with au upward curve, coincident with thatof the shaft upon which it is to be secured, (see fig. 5,) and with a slight re-entrant curve, at an angle with a plane at right angles to the axis of the shaft, of about thirty-one or thirty-two degrees, (see fig. 1,) while the lower edge a of the land-side extends back, also, with an upward curve coincident which it is forced.
with thc circumference of the shaft, (see fig. 2,) in a straight line from the inner edge of the bevel e, forming the front cutting-edge of the share, at an angle with the line of draft, or a plane at right angles to the axis of revolution, of about sixty degrees, as illustrated in fig. 1.
The lower edges of both the mold-board and land- Side of the share terminate at the rear in a right line, D D, figs. 1, 2, 3, and 5, parallel with its axis of rerolution.
The rear edges a' b' of the two sides incline toward each other from the points D D, (see figs. 2 and 3,) until they unite to forni the single upper edge F of the share.
.This upper edge F of the share, formed by the iuterscction of its land-side A aud mold-board B, extends rearwardly from the front beveled edge e G at an angle of about sixty-three degrees, (see fig. 1,) so that the inclination of the rear end b of the moldboard B toward this edge is very much greater than that of the rear end a' of the land-side A of the share, as illustrated in fig. 3.
This upper' edge F, thus extending at an oblique angle to the base-line D D, has an upward curve from front to rear, as illustrated in figs. 2, 4, and G, the extreme height of the curve being formed about midway of its length. Its length is such as that the rear end thereof projects very considerably over and beyond the base-line D D, which connects the rear ends of the lower edges of the two sides A B of the share, and the outer curve of its extreme rearmost point is rather short and abrupt. (See fig. 4.)
The edges of the inner faces of the two sides intersect at this extreme point. (See figs. 2 and 3.)
The faces of the land-side A and mold-board B arc sloped from their lower and rear edges a a b b to the upper and front edges E and e C of' the share with easy, symmetrical curves, that of the mold-side being carefully adapted to the overturning of the soil through (Sec figs. 3 and 6.)
Neither the hollow space within the base ofthe share, illustrated at S, figs. 2, 3, and 5, nor thc curves of the two sides thereof, are essential features of my design.
The baseof the share may be made solid, and the curves of its lower edges or under side may be varied or dispensed with without changing the configuration of the share proper.
I claim as my invention- The design for the outward configuration and forni of a plow-share, as herein shown and described.
)Vitness my hand to this specification.
JAMES '1. )VILSON Witnesses WILLIAM WI LsoN, Z.l L. DAVIS.
