Patented Sept. [9, I899.
v n. HORTON. HANDLE FOR SPOONS, FORKS, 0R SIMILAR ARTICLES.
(Application filed Aug. 26, 1899.)
INVINZ' UH WITNEEEIE."
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS R. HORTON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE .l. B. & S. M. KNOWLES COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, FORKS, OR SIMILAR ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 31,517, dated September 19, 1899.
Application filed August 26, 1899. Serial No. 728,630. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it 71mg concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS R. HORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State 5 of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a new and original Design for the Handle of a Spoon, Fork, or Similar Article, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, form- 6 ing part thereof.
Figure 1 is a view of the front or obverse side of a handle, showing my design. The handle is shown attached to the bowl of a spoon, the timed blade of a fork being indicated in 5 broken lines. Fig. 2 is a view of the hacker reverse side of the handle.
The leading features of my design consist of the raised foliated scroll ornamentation of the stem of the handle divided by trans- :o versely-extended beaded bands and the foli-- ated scrolls on each side along the margin of the blade inclosing a panel and ending in pyramidically-disposed groups of semispherical beads. as In the drawings, A indicates the bowl of the spoon, B the stem of the handle, and O the blade. lhe beaded band 1 extends transversely across both sides near the end of the handle, and from the band 1 the foliated scrolls 2 extend over the end of the handle to the junction of the handle with the bowl of the spoon. From the upper side of the band extend the foliated scrolls 3, from which the raised beads extend upward along the margin of the stem, terminating in the inwardlycxtending foliations 5.
On the obverse side the raised stem 6 extends centrally between the marginal beads 4 4, terminating in the foliation 7, the cen tral leaf of which partly overlies the beaded band 8 at the upper end of the stem near the junction of the stem with the blade of the handle.
On the reverse side of the handle the stem 6 and the foliated end 7 of the stem are omitted. From the upper edge of the band 8 raised foliated scrolls 9 extend upward to the blade. From these foliated scrolls 9 extend the marginal beads 10, inclosing the central panels and curving inward, terminating in the scrolls 11, supporting pyramidical groups of semispherical beads 12, which form the end ornamentation of the handle.
On the obverse side two foliated branches extend along the inside of the marginal beads 10, and the scrolls 11 are ornamented with foliated rosettes, giving to the obverse side of the handle a more ornate appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for the handle of a spoon, fork or similar article herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
LOUIS R. HORTON.
