TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. FRANCIS, of Newport, in the county of Newport, and State of Rhode Island, have invented or produced a new and improved Monogram Visiting Card, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has relation to the method of inscribing upon a visiting card the name of the individual whom the card is supposed, by conventional usage,to represent; or, rather, it relates to the method of arranging and disposing the letters or characters of which such name is composed; and it is intended to supersede the use of the ordinary visiting card, upon which, as is well known, the name is written, printed, or engraved in script," German, or Old English text, or any other style of letter dictated by the prevailing fashion. Instead of thus spreading out the name at length, I form the letters of which it is composed into a. monogram, or, in other words, interlace them one with another in such manner that, while the name is legible and readily distinguished, a beautiful and graceful design at the same time is formed, which gives to the card at once a pleasing and unique appearance.
In the specimen which accompanies this application I have exemplified the manner in which my invention may be carried into effect by forming the monogram upon the visiting card of the letters of which my own nameS. W. FRANCISlS composed. The initials of the given name," it will be observed, are separate from the Christian" name, and to prevent confusion are printed or engraved in difierent colors from that employed in printing the central part of the monogram. I
It is manifest that the form'of the letters, as well as the letters themselves, can be changed as required by circumstances or the taste of the individual for whom the monogram is designed, and that the general form and outline of the monogram may be varied, and, indeed, must vary, to be adapted to the particular name it is required to represent.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A monogram visiting card, or visiting card upon which the name is inscribed or printed in the form of a monogram, substantially as herein specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
SAML W. FRANCIS.
