DESIGN FOR A CASKET-HANDLE EAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 25,307, dated March 31, 1896.

Application filed February 28, 1896. Serial No. 681,209. Term of patent '7 years.

Be it known that I, ERNEST CLEFF, of Fairhaven, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Design for Casket-Handle Ears, of which the following is a specification.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,

gure 1 is a plan view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 an end elevation, of a caskethandle ear containing my design, these three views being deemed necessary to fully illustrate my new design.

The leading feature of my design consists in araised marginal knurl, Whichis flanked at two opposite sides by corner-forming scrolls, which are inclined, as a Whole, from the sides of the knurl to the ends of the ear; the knurl descending toward the opposite margin of the ear to about the middle thereof, and there terminating in a point inclosed With radial groovework on a flattish field extending to the slightly-raised side margin of scrollwork opposite the knurl and corner-scrolls.

A is the high marginal knurl ornamented with leafwork a, and extending downwardly to apoint a, near the middle of the ear. Point a is inclosed in radiating groovework a which is surrounded,except 011 the knurl side, by a flattish field a the outer ends of grooves a being inclosed by a series of round-point plain-faced loopwork a Knurl Ais flanked at opposite sides by bold corner-scrolls B, beginning at 1), near the opposite corners and terminating in bosses b. Each scroll B, taken as a whole, is inclined downwardly from the knurl to the end margins of the car, which, viewed in top-plan, is approximately parallelogrammatic in outline. Short scrolls 1) spring from the corner-scrolls B. The depressed portions of each scroll B are ornamented with pendent drops 19 One long edge of the ear, along the margin opposite the knurl, has a raised rib D terminating in scrolls d. Sockets F occupy the two corners opposite the corners occupied by the cornerscrolls B, the contiguous corners of the plate having angular projections f and bosses f at end of inward edge curves f Which turn inwardly at f making recesses thereaton the edge of the plate. The edge of the ear is plain-surfaced, but indented at g, g, g g g, and g along its rear edge, which, viewed in rear elevation, shows the knurl at the middle and the adjacent corner-scrolls descending to opposite ends of the ear.

What I claim is-- The design for a casket-handle ear herein shown and described.
