PETER K. DED'ERIGK, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 99,297, dated February 1,1870.
mob-
IMPROVEMENT :IIN BALING- PRESSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and'making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern p Be it known that I, PETER K. DEDERIGK, of Albany, in the county of Albany, and State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baling-Presses; and 'I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to' the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a side view of my improved press, the sills being cut away in the middle to render the drawing more co'mpact.
Figure 2 is a top view of the capstan and wreathing of the ropes.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the press.
Figure 4 is a detached view of the lever and its connections.
Figure 5 is a plan or top view.
The object of my invention is to construct a press so that it may be used with a beater, and also have suicient traverse of power to give the necessary box-room for tramping in loose hay, or use without a beater. J
My invention consists- First, of increasing the traverse of the power by means of guides or slots extending from the sockets or bearings of the lever, so asto allow the levers to be drawn from their bearings and moved upward.
Second, the rests or sockets to support the rods, when removed from the course of the follower or heater.
Third, accumulating the power by means of a sliding block connected to eac-l1 lever by a single line, and to the capstan by the wreathing-rope, thus materially diminishiugthe friction, over the ordinary method o f wreathing directly around sheaves in the levers.
Fourth, the double wheel at the top of the press for increasing the velocity in reversing the follower, so as to require but a small and inexpensive capstan, as compared with the beater-capstans now used.
Fifth, a loose or adjustable block between the follower or beater-timbers, in connection with the reversing-rope, for detaching the power-rods, and removing them from the course of the beater or follower.
In the construction of my improved press, the sills A support the box B, and also the capstan C.
The box has three clasping-frames, D and F V, and is provided with hinges (Z e f, and with swinging rods g, so as to open and close the side of the box, foi` convenience in removing the bale.
Also, the box has doors H, hinged at h, so as to swing down, for convenience in filling. These doors are held shut by sliding bolts'U.
Above the box is a frame, G, for supporting the wheels Q and R, which carry the cords S and T, for operating the beater N.
The levers K may be drawn from theirbearings,
Awhen they will slide upward, in slots or guides L, until the upper ends of the rods M reach the top of the box, where they can be swung back upon rests W, away from the beater, or out of. the'course ofthe latter. lu order to thus throw these rods back automatically, the
. beater carries an adjustable trip-block, P, with its ends bevelled at' the top, so that the bar fm will slideoff sidewise upon escaping the top ofthe box; and the bar is provided with rollers onits ends, to prevent friction in thus sliding.
In operating, the follower or beater is drawn up and the rods forced on the rests W, as shown in fig. l. The box is then filled by either beating or tramping. The rods are then forced from their rests and attached over the beater, and -the follower is then drawn down by means of the capstan and ropes, the levers moving down in their slots until they reach their bearings, when they assume an effective acting position, vibrating outward and downward, thence downward and iuward, with the full advantage of progressive-leverage.
From the capstan C, the wreathing-rope Y runs to a sliding block, d, which is connected with each lever by single ropes, Z and Z'.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim- 1. The guides or slots L, in connection with Athe levers K, rods M, and follower or beater N, substantially as set forth.
2. `The combination of the levers K, rods M, and rests W, to support the rods when removed from the follower, substantially as described.
3. The ropes Z Z', sliding block d, and wreathed rope Y, arranged substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
4- The sheaves or wheels Q and R, in combination with the capstan C, rope S, hoisting-rope T, and follower or beater N, substantially for the purpose set forth.
5. The trip-block P, in connection with the beater N and rope T, snbstan tiall y as specified.
PETER K. DEDERICK.
