JOHN L. RITER, OF
LIBERTY, INDIANA.,
Letters Patent No. 99,238, dated January 25, 1870..
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAIN-DRILL FEED.
'The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o the same To all whom it may conce/rn;
Be it known that I, JOHN L. RITER, of Liberty, in the county ot Union, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain- Drill Feed; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure 1. represents a longitudinal section; and
vFigure 2, a plan view, with the top removed, of my grain-drill. v A
Similar letters indicate like parts in both figures.l
The nature ol' my invention consists in the employment, in a` seed-drill, of an ordinary hopper, povided withgrooved metallic boxes, substantially' in the luanner and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
It .further consists in the employment of a slide 0perating in said grooves, forthe purpose hereinafter described. I
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings- A represents the hopper.
Ii B are metallic feed-boxes, secured on the bottom of said hopper.
O C are holes for the feed-shaft.
l) is the feed-shaft, andis ,made with a groove in one Side.
E E are the feed-wheels, and are adjustable on the feed-shaft by means of a key set in the feed-wheel, operating in the groove in saidfeed-shaft. y
F l" are arms arranged ou the feed-wheel. By placing two rows of arms upon the feed-wheels, and by arranging the arms so that each arm will be equidistant from the other, the feedis continued. As the arms extend about half Way across the wheel, the feed is never. cut o, as only one arm, extendinghalf Way across the feed-wheel, can be passing the slidel at any one time.
G G are grooves in the metallic feed-boxes, for the reception of feed-regulator.
H is a groove in the bottom of hopper for reception of feed-regulator. l
I .is a slide, operating perpendicularly or nearly so in grooves G G and H, over the feedfwheelafor the purpose of regulatingk the quantity of grain to be sown. By raising said slide' the quantity is decreased.
J J are fulcra attached to the ends of the slide, and pi'voted to levers K K, attached to the ends of the hopper. l"One end of the lever is secured to the hopper, and the other end operates upon an indicator attached to the side of the hopper. By raising or lowering said lever upon the indicator, the slide is raised or lowered. By the above arrangement, I obtain a constant rotary force-feed, and the machine is easily adj usted to sow any quantity without, changing wheels.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Grooves G G in metallic feed-boxes, when arranged substantially as' and for the purpose described.
2. Groove .H in bottom of hopper, when arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Slide I operating in grooves G G H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
I aiix rny signature in presence of two Witnesses.
` JOHN L. RITER.
Witnesses E. B. GoULD,
F. T. DREBERT.
In testimony that'I claim 'the foregoing as my own,l
