To all whom 'it may concer/n:

Be it known that we, EARL P. MABEN and CARL C. MABEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Hugo, in the county of Lincoln and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a protector' for use by railway conductors, yardmen, lumbermen, or others whose vocations require them to do considerable checking or other writing in the open.

The device has for its primary object to provide a protector for the checking pad or book and also for the hand of the user so that the writing may be protected from rain, whereby the liability of it being obliterated is overcome.

A further object resides in the provision of a simple and novel device of the above character, and means associated therewith, for heating the interior or pad holding case, and also to provide light whereby the device may be used at night.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a case and an adjustable hood therefor, said case having a glass covered sight opening in its top and means arranged on the bottom thereof to allow the case to be turned to any desired angle upon a support.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device, one end of the same being broken away to show the swinging lamp arranged therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, showing the position of the users hand in the use of the device. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line Jr-1 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the pivoted rocking base block.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 indicates the case which is of general rectangular form and the greater portion of the upper surface thereof is inclined as shown at 6. This inclined portion of the casing is open and covered with glass or other transparent material 7. The forward end of the case is provided with a hinged door 8 which has a spring catch 9 secured to its upper edge, to engage on the top of the case, and hold said door closed. This catch is also adapted to engage the edge of a hood 10 which is hinged upon the top of the case adjacent its rear end as shown at 10. This hood is formed with the parallel side plates 11, which connect the intermedil ate or body portion thereof, said body portion being adapted to engage upon and cover the glass top 7 of the case. The provision of the hood 10 affords a protection for the glass top of the case in rainy weather so that the user of the device may at all times clearly see the writing pad which is arranged within the same, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth. The side plates 11 of the hood 9 are each provided adjacent to their lower rear edges with an arcuate slot 12, through which a stud 13 secured to the side of the case projects. A set screw 14 is threaded through one side of the hood and is adapted to bind upon the side of the case 5 to secure the hood in an adjusted position above the glass covered top of the case. It will be obvious however, that if desired, the ends of the studs 13 may be threaded and wing nuts threaded thereon to clamp the hood in its adjusted position. The provision of the separate set screw 14C is preferred however, as the use of but one hand is required in the adjustment of the hood, said hood moving freely upon the pins 13. The rear end of the case 5 is also provided with a hinged door 15 and in this end of the case the lamp 16 is arranged. This lamp is disposed upon the pivoted support 17, and at its base is screwed or otherwise rigidly secured thereto. Rods 18 are secured to the support 17 at diametrically opposite points, and are connected at their ends to form trunnions 19, which are mounted in the bearings 2O secured t0 the sides of I the case 5. VThus the lamp is supported for l swinging movement within the case whereby the case may be positioned at any desired angle while the lamp will be maintained in its proper horizontal position. A supporting rod 18 is also pivoted at its ends to the opposite sides of the case and at its center is formed with a loop through which the upper end of the lamp chimney extends. This rod rotates with the swinging movement of the lamp and prevents displacement of the chimney from the burner.

Above the lamp a bell 21 is secured in the top of the case, and is formed with a tubular extension 2l which extends through the top of the case and is perforated to admit air to the lamp. A bulls-eye 22 is centrally secured in the hinged door l5 so that the lamp may serve for illuminating the road way as well as heating the interior of the case, and affording sufficient light for the operator to follow the notations made upon the pad or book arranged in the case.

In Fig. 3 of the drawings, the book B is shown positioned in the case beneath the glass cover 7 The leaves of this book may be held opened by means of suitable spring clips 23 secured to the sides of the case, as clearly shown in said figure. The hinged front end 8 of the case is provided with an opening around the edges of which, sheet rubber material 24 is secured. This material is also provided with an opening through which the users hand may be inserted,tl ie rubber engaging closely upon the wrist and preventing the entrance of rain or drafts of air to the interior of the case.

Upon the bottom of the case 5 the base block 25 is removably arranged. The case is pivotally supported by this block so that it may be turned to any desired angle. This base block gradually tapers from one end to the other and is of substantially semi-circular form in cross section. Adjacent to the large end of the block 25, a pivot pin 26 is secured therein, the endof which is provided within an enlarged head 26. The base of the case is formed with a short longitudinal slot 27, one end of which is enlarged at 27 to receive the head 26 of the pivot pin. Thus the block 25 may be easily and quickly attached or removed to or from the bottom of the case, the head 26 of the pin moving freely through the opening 27 ,the shank of said pin being longitudinally movable in the slot 27 `The supporting block 25 is preferably provided with the conveX outer surface so that the case may be rocked whereby the user is permitted to position the ease and his arm at an angle to the car or other foundation on which. the case is positioned,

when it is necessaryr for the writer to move his body from the front of the case to see the numerals or other characters painted or stamped upon the car, thus relieving the wrist of strain and eliminating the necessity of moving the entire case.

From the foregoing it is believed that the construction and operation of our improved protecting case will be readily understood without necessitating any further description.

The device is extremely simple and` of great convenience for the purpose specified. The case and hood are preferably c0nstructed from aluminum which is light and a noncorrosive material, whereby the durability of the device is greatly increased. By the use of our invention, whereby conductors, yardmen, lumbermen, and othersk who are required to check work or keep other memoranda, while working in the open, are provided a protection for the hand, and for the check book.

The hood 9 may readily be adjusted to permit the user to see into the case and follow thewriting. The hands are also kept warm in cold weather, by the heat from the lamp 16, and at night, the lamp will provide ample illumination for the interior of the case sothat the user is enabled to utilize the device at all times. i

hile we have shown and described the particular embodiment of the invention, it

will be obvious that the same may be vari-v ously modified in form `and proportion, and in the details of construction without materially departing from the essential features or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

We claim:

l. A device of the character described comprising a case having a transparent top, means for securing a writing pad within the case, said case having an opening in one end, a base block removably attached to the bottom of the case, and a lamp mounted in said case.

2. A device of the character described comprising a case having a transparent top and an opening in one end, means arranged on the sides of the case engageable with the writing pad to secure the same beneath the transparent top, a lamp in said case, and a base` block having a convex outer surface detachably secured to the bottom of the case, said base block tapering from end to end and being adapted to support the case for rocking movement.
