CHARLES E. QUINLAN. or EvANsIoN, ILLINOIS'.
, FOLDING TABLE.
To all whom it may concern:
13e-1t known that I, CrIAnLns E. Qumran,
ar citizen ofthe United States, residing atuvanston, in the county of Cool: and State 4of Illinois, hiwe invented certain new and useful Iiriprovements in Folding Tables, of whichv the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tables for porches and=otlier places, and which may be readily folded in order to bcvpiit away over night, iny object being to providea simple and inexpensive coiistruction in which the frame is locked in both tlieextendcd and folded With this in mind, my invention resides inthe fiatures of construction and arrangement to be 'now described with regard to the 'accompanying drawing, in which#A F igiircv 1 is a side elevation of the folded frame. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan of the central portion of one of the trames.` Fig. 4 is an elevation of the central portion of the other frame, and, Fig` 5 is a section taken on line Fim-5 of Fig. 2.
.Referring now to these figures, my iniproved table embodies a stand formed ot'. a pair of centrally crossed frames, both of which are in theliiselves substantially rectangular and wholly rigid. One ot t'l'iese frames is composed ot' two parts 5 and (i, each part of whiclrcomprises an upright. and short horizontal ai'iiis S and t) adjacentl to the ii'pper and lowereiidsof said upright respectively, tliese-ariiis` having their inner adjacent ends ciit. aw'ay to forni reduced extensions 10. '.lhese reduced extensions l0,
as shown particularly in Figs, 1 and 5, have their lower surfaces ciit away to receive the reduced ends of upper and .lower tansverse cross pieces 12. the lower-siirfams of which are flush with the lower surfaces of-the arms 8 and 9, and lthe upper siirfaces'of which are flush with the upper surfaces Vof the vexten- 4sions' 10. 'lliese cross pieces 12, h eing cured by suitable means t3, connect, the parts of this frame in otl'set. relation as will be selen by reference to ltigs. and 2'. .'\s shown in Fig. 3, the cross pieces which are identical in construction. have. central openings l-t.y
'lhe other fran'ie comprises side iipriglits 15 connected by upper andflower horizontal Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1911.
Application led September 10, 1910. Serial No. 581,414.
the length of the cross pieces 12, whereby .they may rest with the reduced portions 18 .(the result being cut. away as before mentioned) along the cross .pieces 12 in the Yposition partly indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5. In this position, the upper surfaces of the arms .lt will be flush with the upper surfaces of the arms 8 and 9, and said arms 16 will .be locked from sidewise movement by the engagement of the end s of the cut away portion 17 closely against the ends of l the piecesl, also by the shouldered ends of the arms 8 and 9. To fold the frames together it'. is only necessary to raise the arms .16 and then swing them around against the sides of the arms 8 and 9 as shown in full lines Fig. 2. In order that the two' frames rmay not become entirely separated, I prefor to have pivot pins 1S), which extend npwardly and loosely through the openings 14 in the transverse pieces 1Q and are secured centrally in the reduced portions 18 of' the arms 1G, thus also lfacilitating the swinging ol the latter arms when opening and eiosing the table, 'lhese pivot pins lt) 'may have lower enlarged ends 20 to prevent. being pulled entirely through the transverse pieces 'l2 and the upper arms 8, 9 and 1G of the two frames may have their outer ends provided with upstanding extensions 22 in order-to hold'a tabletop (not shown) thereon.
- llaving thus fully described my invention,A
what l. claim is:
.'Lfolding table comprising a pair of rectangular frames, one of the said frames be.- ing formed of'a pair of uprights andnpper and lower one-piece, straight, horizontal members connecting said iiprights, the other of said -frames being formed of uprights and upper and lower straight horizontal members connecting saidV iiprights, each of said last'.- iiaiiied members being in two parts, having their iiiiier adjacent ends reduced. transverse, pieces connecting the said reduced 'ends iii otl'set relation. said tirst nainedfrtari'ie having its said horizontal members provided with cut-out portions in their lower Siirfaces, equal iii length to and adapted to fit arms 16, these latter having their lower sur- -.faces eut away at a central point, as shown at- 17, for` a distance slightly greater that ovor said transverse pieces, whroby the frames ma)r be locked in the open and folded.
positions, ln' the Asame plane andjneans'to'.
ivotally connect the yframos and permt 5 imitcd vertical movement of the first named frame with res ect to the last named frame to fold vand unv old Ythe frames.
In `testimon vwhereof ax my sgnatur inpresence o two witnesses. M CHARLES E, fggUmLA'N.V
