Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed .Tune 2, 1910. Serial No. 564,537.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. A. RAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Dividers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to grain dividers for harvesters, and particularly to that type of divider attachment adapted to be folded in a manner to reduce the width of the machine for transportation or storage purposes; the object of my invention being to provide a mechanism comprising few parts, strong and rigid when in operative position, easily and readily folded, and efficient in operation. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents an end elevation of part of a grain harvester platform having my improved grain divider attachment secured to the grainward end thereof; Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1, along line A-B; Fig. 3 is a cross section of Fig. 1 along line BC; and Fig. 4 is a cross section of part of Fig. 3 through its socket member.
Like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views.
1 represents the grain platform, 2 the cutter bar at its front side, 3 the guards secured thereto, 4 the sickle, 5 a grain wheel supporting bracket secured to the grainward end of the platform, 6 a wheel supporting plate slidably mounted upon the bracket, having a toothed edge 7 adapted to engage with a worm wheel 8 secured to the end of a crank member 9, secured in a bearing 10, forming part of the bracket member.
11 is a stub axle member secured to plate 6, upon which is j ournaled the grain wheel 12. The grainward end of the platform includes a frame member 13, and 14 represents a corner bracket secured to the cutter bar, and frame member 13 and extending grainward is an arm portion 15, to which is secured the front of a wheel tongue 16, the rear end thereof being secured to frame member 13 at the rear side of the platform. The corner bracket let is provided with ear portions 17 to which are pivotally connected the rear end of bars 18 by means of a pin 19, the bars extending in front of the cutting apparatus and converging toward their front ends and having a divider point 20 pivotally secured thereto.
21 represents a divider board having its front end secured to the divider point 20, which extending rearward and upward has its flat surface inclined upward and grainward relative to the horizontal plane of the grain platform, and 22 represents a downwardly hanging plate having its upper edge secured to the divider board, the plate forming a shield for the falling grain.
23 represents a knee bracket secured to the divider board intermediate its ends and having a depending portion 24 that is pivotally connected with the upper end of a leg 25 by means of a pin 26, the lower end of the leg being received by a vertically arranged socket member 27 forming part of the corner bracket 14:.
When it is desired to fold the divider the leg may be raised upward out of the socket and the bars 18, with the attached divider board, swung upward and rearward, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the leg placed in a socket member 28 forming part of the grain wheel supporting bracket 5.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A grain divider for harvesters including, in combination, a grain platform, a forwardly extending divider support having its rear end pivotally connected with said platform in a manner permitting said support to swing upward and rearward, a divider member having its forward end secured to said support, a leg pivotally connected with said divider member, and a socket member secured to said platform and adapted to receive said leg.
2. A grain divider for harvesters including, in combination, a grain platform, forwardly converging bars having their rear ends pivotally connected with said platform in a manner permitting them to swing upward and rearward, a divider member having its forward end secured to said bars and inclining rearward and upward, a leg pivotally secured to said divider member, and a socket member secured to said platform and adapted to receive said leg.
3. A grain divider for harvesters including, in combination, a grain platform, a bracket secured to said platform, a forwardly extending divider supporting member having its rear end pivotally connected with said bracket in a manner permitting said member 'to swing upward and rearward, a divider member having its forward end secured to the forward end of said supporting member and extending upward and rearward therefrom, a leg having its upper end pivotally connected with said divider member, and a socket forming part of said bracket and adapted to receive the lower end of said leg.
4. A grain divider for harvesters including, in combination, a grain platform, a; f bracket secured tosaid platform, a forwardly extending divider supporting member havingits rear end pivotally connected with said bracket, a divider member having its I forward end secured to the forward end of said supporting member and extending upward and rearward therefrom, a leg having its upper end pivotally connected with said divider member, a socket forming part of said bracket and adapted to receive the lower end of said leg when the divider is in operative position, and a socket connected with a fixed part of said grain platform and adapted to receive the lower end of said leg when the divider is folded rearward to an inoperative position.
