Letters Patent No. 99,093, dated J anudry 25, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN .G-RAIN-SEPARATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern Be it known that I, DENNIS LADD, of Chicago, in "the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grain-Separators; and Ido declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, broken off 'at parts to show its mechanism.
Figure 2 is a detached sectional view of the strawcarrier.
A represents the frame which supports all the apparatus.
B, the ordinary threshing-cylinder, is provided with the concave 0,.the whole being encased by the sides D.
E is a straw-carrier for conveying the straw from the cylinder after it hasbeen cleaned, andis constructed of iron or other metal rods or wires, with the outer ends bent, forming a chain, as at F, so thatthey are connected, formingone continuous or endless chain, which derives motion from'pulleys G, H, and J, connected by belt to the pulley on the outer end of cylinder shaft K. v
. Belowand at the rear of cylinder B is placed fan L, which receives motion by belt from shaft K Below and under cylinder B is grate.M, which extends to and on top of division-board N.
Hopper-bonnet O,is firmly secured below grate M, with its lower end or mouth extending into the upper end of rotating screen P, and receives motion by means of the bevel-gear wheels 2, shaft 3. pulleys 4 and H.
Fluke-boards or air-guides are placed in front of the fan and back of the grate-bars M, and are secured in the desired position by the aid of pawls and ratchets 5.
The rotating cylinder or screen P is or maybe-covcred with wired clot-h of different sized meshes, the division being at S.
The receptacle-box 'l. is suspended by rod U and yoke W to the frame A, and is provided with parti tion-board Y, and is so constructed that it may be tilted so, as to discharge the grain on either side through the orifices 6. I
- Having named the various parts of my invention, I will now describe its operation.
The unthreshed grain and straw are fed into-the machine over apron 7. The straw is retained upon the carrier after being threshed, and is carried back from the thresber by theaction of said carrier when the machine is in motion, .while the grain and chafi' pass down, and are separated by the grate-bars.
The chafi passes out over the board N, while the grain passes on into and through the bonnet 0 into the screen P, where "the grain passes through the meshes of the wire, and the refuse matter is thrown out at the lower end of the screen.v
The above-mentioned fiukes serve to elevate or depress the current of air, as may be desired. It is suggested that a brush be attached to'the lower side of the division-board N, which will come in contact with the face of the screen, serving to keep it always clean. The whole thus forms a very convenient and compact machine for the purposes intended.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The'constructipn and arrangement of the guideboard N, the grated bars M, the bonnet O, and revolving screw P, as above set forth, and for the purposes above specified.
2. In combination with the above, the carrier E, with its devices for rotation, and the tilting-box T, when constructed, arranged, and operating as and for the purposes aforesaid.
V DENNIS LADD.
