IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET-FLASKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 99,05 l, (lated January 25, i570.

To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR TAPPAN BECKER, of Cohoes, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pocket- Flasks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

It is the object of myinvention to so construct a top for a pocket-ask in two parts or sections that the turning of a section in one direction shall bring an opening therein over a corresponding opening in the other section, to allow the liquid contained in the iiask to run out, or be drawn up by applying the lips to a mouth-piece secured in the opening of the upper section, and the turning of the section the other way shall stop the flow of liquid and prevent leakage by a suitable packing between the two sections; and the improvement herein claimed consistsinthe combination, with a iiask or bottle top formed in two parts, one part turning upon the other, of two openings in each section, (one opening` in each section, when arranged one directly above the other, being for the admission of air to the flask or bottle, and the other two openings, when brought one immediately over the other, being for the passage ofthe liquid from the flask or bottle,) apacking between the sections, a inouth-piece, and a tube communicating with the mouth-piece and extending down into the iiask or bottle.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a view in perspective of a flask with my improved top adapted thereto, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section through the same.

A representsapocketilask (in this instance of glass with a protecting-cover) having suitably secured upon its neck a metallic band or clasping-ring, c, with a screw formed upon its outside. The top is formed in two parts, B b, a flange, b', on the part B fitting snugly upon the recessed sides of the part b, which is provided with a screw-ilange, If, and secured upon the threaded neck-riiig a. The flange bof the upper section of the top, and the screw-flange b2 of the lower section, b, respectively rest a Y little above or upon shoulders formed upon the lower section of the top and the neck-ring. Around the edges of the under side of the top of the part b is secured a packing-ring, c, in this instance of leather, which iits and presses upon the top of the neck-ring a, to prevent leakage. To the under side of the part B is secured a packing, c', of the saine material as that c of the part b, but extending across the under side of the top of the part B, (instead of being secured at its edges only,) and fitting around the central stud or projection, d, upon the part b. Two holes, e e, are made in the top of the lower part or section, b, of the top, and two holes, e e', are made in the top of the part B and in the packing c. These holes in each section are made at equal distances from the centers of the parts B b of the top, and so that those in one section will register with those in the other section when the top section is turned to the proper position upon its pivot f, as shown in Fig. l. This pivotf is formed with a thread. upon its lower end, to screw into the short stud d on top of the lower section, b, of the top, and serves also as a set-sc rew to regulate the eX- tent of pressure upon the packing c', so that either thick or thin or hard or soft material may be used for packing, and when it becomes worn by use the screw-pivot f serves to render it still capable of being used by pressing down the section B upon the section I). rlhe turning movement of one section upon the other, to open or shut off the passage for the liquid from the flask by one set of holes, and the passage for air to the inside of the iiask by the other set, is regulated and'indicated by a pin, g, secured upon the part b, and a recess, h, formed upon the flange b of the part or section B, forming; when the sections are connected, aslot and guide-pin. When the stoppin g is in the position shown in Fig. 1,4 the inlet-passage for air, to insure the flow of the liquid, and the passage for the liquid from the iiask, are both open, and when the section B of the top is turned so as to bring the pin g to the opposite end of the slot 7L the passages are closed. A inouth-piece, i, is secured by a screw in the outlet-hole in the section B, and to a short tube, j, secured in the outlet-hole in the section b, is secured by a iiexible connection a tube, k, reaching to within a short distance of the bottom of the flask, for the purpose of drawing up the liquid by applying the mouth to the piece i. The inlet-passage opening c is provided in this instance with a short tube, Z.

It is obvious that my sectional top may be used without an airinlet passage, although better with it, as the liquid can be drawn into the mouth with greater ease when air is admitted to the flask, and also that a Aflexible tube, o r a tube having` a flexible connection with a hollow stud or short tube secured in the liquid-passage, is not necessary, as a fixed tube might be substituted therefor; but I prefer a flexible or jointed tube, as sneh a tube is free to follow the ineli nation of the flask, so that when there is only alittle liquid in it, and it is tilted or inclined t0 bring` the liquid one corner of the bottom of the flask, the lower end of the tube will follow the movement of the liquid, and thus it may all be drawn froni the iiask.

My'improved top may be applied to any kind of bottle, cask, or vessel, as Well as to flasks for the pocket.

Vhen the flask. is to be placed in the pocket, by giving` the pivot and set-screw f a slight turn, the section B can be made very hard to turn, thus preventing,` the liquid from leaking` out of the flask by the accidental turning,` of

the part B, and t-he screw may be loosened When desired to render the'turning easy.

It is obvious that by applying my apparatus to a tapering cork, one apparatus may be used with bottles having` mouths of different sizes.

Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the fixed perforated section, the turning,` perforated section, (with or without the interposed perforated paeking,) the mouthpiece, and the internal tube, eombined and operating substantially as set forth.
