To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER E. REINEKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in boxes of the kind constructed of light material, such as veneer, fiber-board or other thin stock, which are reinforced with metal binding-strips, of wire in some cases and sheet-metal in others.

I have especially devised my improvement for use in the metal-bound box of reissued Letters Patent of the United States No. 12,800, dated May 26, 1908, to E. E. Flora, and therefore herein describe it in that particular connection with reference to the ac companying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a broken perspective view showing one end-portion of the box of the aforesaid patent; Fig. 2 is a section on line 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the two similar box-heads, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged broken sectional View in perspective showing my improved fastening means operatively applied to a side and end of the box.

Boxes of the patented construction referred to are, like different other boxes, shipped with advantage, to the trade or user, in knock-down condition for assembly of the parts by the user. To that end the box is formed at the factory with the bottom and side sections as a blank, with those sections, as also the lid when desired (that is, if it be provided as a hinged lid) united along their edges by the sheet-metal binding-strips, thereby adapting the blank to be folded into condition to form the body of the box by properly bending the metal binding betwen sections, and at the same time wrapping these sections about the boxheads, placed in position for the purpose. To enable the user, after thus assembling the parts, to pack or fill the box with material to be shipped in it, the assembled parts must be retained in their box-folding rela tion. This might be done by confining the box until the parts are secured together by fastening down the lid, in a suitable frame, which, however, is not a practically desirable away, or by stapling, riveting or indenting the flanges of the metal binding to the box-heads, which abut outwardly against them, for which operations, however, the user is not ordinarily equipped.

The object of my invention is to provide simple and effective means on the sides and heads of the box which may be readily and conveniently caused to cooperate to secure the assembled parts of the box together under the conditions referred to, and which shall, moreover, serve the further purpose of materially strengthening the structure.

A box 5 formed of the described blank, comprises a body-portion composed of sheets of veneer or analogous light stock, forming the sides 6, 6, the bottom 7 and the lid 8, with sheet-metal binding strips 9, each composed of a series of connected troughshaped sections having flanges 10 extending from the inner edges of the troughs, these sections binding the ends of the sheets and being fastened thereto, as by indenting them at intervals, and the flanges forming abutments for the box-heads 11 against their displacement.

To adapt the parts to be securely fastened together in assembling the blank and heads, each of the latter is provided near the center of its lateral edges, and preferably also near the center of its lower edge, with staples 12 projecting at the inner faces of the heads to form loops; and on each side is provided a tongue 12 of flexible sheet-metal in position to register with a loop, the tongues being fastened by extending them from underneath the respective binding-strip sections, as represented. in Fig. 4, where they are fastened by the means employed for securing the binding-strips to the body-forming sheets.

When the blank, referred to, is folded about the heads 11 the straight free ends of the tongues 12 pass through the loops 12 with which they register and the operator bends them about the staples, as shown in Fig. 4, to fasten them and rigidly secure together the body and ends of the box, besides materially reinforcing the structure.
