Description

' arid @met dtlljlire.
ROBERT A. GOODYEAR, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 99,429, dated February l, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may concern Be. itknown that I ROBERT A. GooDYEA 1t, of Binghamton, in the county ot Broome, and State of 'N ew York, have invented an Improvement in Means for Ventilating; and vthe following is declared to be a correct description of the same.
The object of this invention is to ventilate by an ordinary window, without exposing the occupants of the room to a draught of' air. v
If a window is raised at the bottom, or lowered at the top, a direct current of air passes above or below the sash into the room, and usually, it the bottom sash is raised, a cold current of air passes in below the sash,
and there is an outward ventilation between the top and bottom sash. In all these cases, the air that enters the room is verylikely to be detrimental to health, or 'disagreeable in some portions of the apartment.
My invention is iliade with reference to admitting air between the upper and lower sashes of a. window, consists in a movable sash-strip provided with elastic material to make a tight joint with the lower sash, so that when the sash is raised, and said strip insertedin the wiudow-frame,and the sash closed down upon the same, the parts around the bottom of thesash will be tight, but the lower sash will be kept up, leaving a space between the meeting rails, through which a Ventilating current ot' air may pass. If that current' is an outward one,'the heated air will pass off from near the middle ofthewindow, and if that current of airis inward, the same will be deflected upward between the two sashes, and commingle with the warmer atmosphere in the upper part of the room, producing an agreeable supply of fresh air.
1n the drawiug,1 have represeutedina verticalsectionl g. 1, the lower and'central portions of windowsashes withthe sash-strip a, below the lower sash b, and setting within the stop-bead c, so that the meeting rail d will be raised above the meeting raiie, ofthe upper sash, and thereby allow the aforesaid space for ventilation.
The strip of rubber t, or otherelastic materia-l, serres to make a tight joint between the strip ,and bottom of the sash b.
If the strip of material be in one piece, the ends l should be rounded slightly, sothatit may be dropped in between the stop-beads and parting-strips, by euterng one end, and then the other, whilein an inclined position, or said strip may be made in two parts, hinged as shown in the sectional plan, iig. 2, so that the sashstrip may be partially folded to enterthe ends between the stop-beads and parting-strips.
The vertical joint may berendered tightby the strip of rubber o, secured in one portion of the strip a.
I claim, as my invention- The sash-strip a, and elastic material, at t, applied in the manner specified, to allow ventilation to take place between the upper andlower sashes, as setforth.
Dated this 28th day of December, A. D. 1869.
R. A. GOODYEAR.
